Chapter 4 - The Shadows of St. Jude’s

I stared at the glowing phone screen, the cold text burning into my retina. My breathing turned shallow and sharp. They were watching us. They knew we had figured it out.
I immediately forwarded the screenshot to Mark with a single line: “They sent this. Where are you?”
Seconds later, my phone rang. It was Mark.
"Sarah, I got the picture," Mark said, his voice a frantic whisper. "I'm outside David's lab right now. He just took the samples. He's running the test, but honestly, that text message confirms everything."
"Mark, what do we do?" I sobbed quietly, moving into the bathroom so I wouldn't wake Max. "They said no police. If we make a wrong move, they could hurt her!"
"Listen to me," Mark said, trying to force calm into his tone. "My security contact at St. Jude’s Hospital, Greg, just called me back. He bypassed the head of security and pulled the hallway logs for floor three—your maternity wing—from two days ago."
"Did he see anything?"
"Yes," Mark replied, his voice darkening. "At 3:14 PM, while I was downstairs getting juice with Max, the hallway camera outside your room experienced a 'signal glitch' for eight minutes. When the feed came back online, a woman wearing a doctor's lab coat—a gray coat over dark scrubs—was walking away carrying a heavy duffel bag."
"That's her," I whispered. "That's the woman Max saw!"
"Greg managed to track her on the exterior parking lot cameras," Mark continued. "She entered a black sedan with covered license plates. But here's the crazy part, Sarah—she didn't break into the room. She had a keycard. An official staff keycard assigned to the chief administrator of the maternity ward, Dr. Evelyn Vance."
"Dr. Vance?" I frowned, searching my memory. Dr. Vance was a prominent, highly respected obstetrician who had overseen the late stages of my pregnancy. She was smooth-spoken, wealthy, and widely praised for her charitable work in child medicine. "Why would Dr. Vance be involved in kidnapping my baby?"
"I don't know yet," Mark said. "But David promised the DNA results will be ready by 4:00 AM. I'm going to meet Greg near the hospital to look at more footage off the record. Please stay locked inside."
"Be careful, Mark," I pleaded before hanging up.
I walked back into the bedroom and looked down at the infant in the playpen. She opened her tiny dark eyes and let out a faint, hungry whimper.
Despite the nightmare unfolding around me, my maternal instincts kicked in. I lifted the baby gently, cradling her against my chest, and prepared a bottle of formula. As she drank, I noticed something subtle. On the inside of her left wrist, hidden under the fold of her sleeve, was a tiny, faded red ink stamp—the kind used by private event venues or exclusive private clinics. It read: V-7.
What did V-7 mean?
I grabbed my laptop, sat beside the sleeping child, and began searching online. I searched Dr. Evelyn Vance's name alongside terms like "V-7," "clinic," and "adoption." Most results were standard medical articles and glowing news reports. But when I searched deep into obscure medical registries, I found an archived article from seven years ago.
It detailed a controversial private fertility clinic owned by Dr. Vance that had been quietly shut down following allegations of unauthorized genetic research and high-profile black-market adoptions for ultra-wealthy clients. The charges had been dropped due to lack of evidence.
A horrifying realization began to take shape. My baby wasn't stolen at random. This was a calculated operation.

Suddenly, the lights in our house flickered and went out completely, plunging the bedroom into total darkness.
Downstairs, the quiet chime of the security system alerted: Front door opened.
