Chapter 1 - The Boy at the Doorway

My five-year-old son glanced at our newborn and stated, "That’s Not My Sister" — I believed he was simply jealous at first, until he revealed what he had witnessed.
On the first evening that our newborn daughter arrived home, my five-year-old refused to step into her room.
He remained in the doorway, gazing at the crib with a look I’d never seen before.
Then he slowly moved away and quietly said, "Mommy, you brought home the wrong baby."
Initially, I almost laughed.
Max had been eagerly waiting for a little sister for months. He selected her blankets, chose a stuffed rabbit for her crib, and proudly told his classmates at kindergarten he would become "the best big brother in the world."
At the hospital, he appeared completely devoted to her.
He sat next to my bed, held her hand, and vowed he would always protect her.
Once we were home, however, he distanced himself from her.
He avoided her entirely. He wouldn’t speak her name, and each time she cried he would block his ears and leave the room.
I assumed jealousy was at play—until I discovered him weeping quietly just outside the nursery.
"That baby isn’t my sister," he repeated.
This time, his voice trembled with fear.
I knelt down next to him and asked what made him say that.

Max took my hand and softly confided:
"Because I saw what they did at the hospital after Daddy took me to get juice."
