Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault

The police sirens faded into the distance outside the grand ballroom, leaving behind an atmosphere thick with shock and embarrassment. Several guests began whispering among themselves, grabbing their coats and slipping out the side exits, eager to distance themselves from the scandal.
My mother walked over, her face stained with tears, trembling as she reached out to touch my arm.
"Emma... I am so, so sorry," she choked out. "I didn't know. Peter swore to me that Evan was a successful investor... he said he was helping secure your future."
"It's okay, Mom," I said gently, though my heart was still racing. "Go home. Take Sophie with you. I need to handle this."
Mara stayed by my side, snapping the blue file shut. "The police have taken statements from the venue manager and secured the original security footage. But Emma, we have a bigger problem."
I looked at her, my exhaustion momentarily forgotten. "What kind of problem?"
Mara pulled a folded sheet of paper from her jacket pocket—a document she had retrieved from Evan’s discarded coat on the chair behind the sweetheart table.
"When I was reviewing Evan's background files this past week, I noticed something strange about the corporate shell company he and Peter set up to acquire your lake house," Mara explained, unfolding the paper on the cake table. "It wasn't registered in his name. It was registered under a parent holding corporation called Vane Industries."
The name sent a sudden chill down my spine. I knew that name.
"Daniel’s old firm," I whispered.
"Yes," Mara nodded grimly. "Before Daniel passed away unexpectedly, he was investigating corporate espionage and embezzlement within his own engineering firm—Vane Industries. At the time, the board ruled his death an accidental drowning during a weekend fishing trip at your lake house. But looking at these documents, Evan didn't just stumble into your life by accident eight months ago. He was planted there."
The room seemed to spin slightly. All the pieces of the puzzle began clicking together in a terrifying new light.
Evan wasn't just a common con man looking for a quick payday. He was connected to the very people who had forced Daniel out of his company—and perhaps, people who had a hand in Daniel's death.
"He targeted us," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "The lake house... it wasn't just a piece of valuable real estate. Daniel left something hidden there."
"A physical drive or paper archives," Mara confirmed, pointing to a highlighted clause in the document. "Look at this specific transfer deed. The company isn't just trying to acquire the property; they specifically demanded total demolition rights within thirty days of the deed transfer. They want to tear the cabin down to the foundations."
I stared at the paper. For years, I had kept Daniel’s old study at the lake house untouched, thinking it was just a shrine to his memory. But Daniel had been an engineer and a meticulous archivist. If he suspected he was in danger, he would have hidden his research somewhere impossible to find—unless you knew exactly where to look.
"We need to go to the lake house tonight," I said, my resolve hardening into steel.
"It's dangerous, Emma," Mara warned. "If Evan has accomplices still active in Vane Industries, they already know the police have him. They’ll be watching every move you make."
"Let them watch," I replied, pulling off my wedding veil and letting the white lace fall to the floor. "They took the wrong widow."
Two hours later, after dropping Sophie off safely at my mother’s house under the protection of a trusted family friend, Mara and I drove out of the city toward the quiet, mist-covered shores of Silver Lake.
The moon was hidden behind heavy storm clouds, casting an eerie, pitch-black shadow over the winding mountain road. Our headlights cut through the thick fog as we turned onto the private gravel driveway leading to Daniel’s lake house.
As we approached the property, my foot instinctively hit the brake.

The front gate—which was always kept locked with a heavy iron chain—was standing wide open.
Inside the dark, tree-lined clearing, a single set of red taillights flickered in the driveway. Someone was already inside the house.
