Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Ten years later.
The lake house had undergone a few loving renovations over the years—a larger wrap-around porch, a solar-powered workshop where I now taught young engineering students the basics of sustainable design, and a sprawling garden that bloomed every summer with hundreds of brilliant yellow sunflowers.
On a warm July afternoon, the lawn was filled with laughter, music, and the chatter of family and close friends.
Strings of fairy lights were strung through the branches of the tall pine trees, casting a magical glow over the long wooden tables set up near the water's edge.
In the center of the lawn stood a fifteen-year-old girl in a simple, elegant white summer dress, laughing as she pinned a boutonniere onto David’s lapel.
Sophie had grown into a brilliant, confident young woman. She had her father’s sharp intellect and adventurous spirit, having just accepted an early-admission scholarship to study environmental engineering at the state university.
I stood inside the open-air workshop doorway, wearing a soft blue dress, watching the scene unfold with a heart full of absolute gratitude.
David walked over, wiping a speck of dust off his jacket sleeve, and smiled as he slipped his arm around my waist.
"The guest of honor is demanding to know when cutting the cake is happening," David teased gently.
I laughed, leaning my head against his shoulder. "Tell her patience is a virtue, especially when the baker is her grandmother."
"She gets her impatience entirely from you," David replied with a warm chuckle.
Down by the water, Sophie raised a sparkling cider glass toward us, catching my eye across the lawn and flashing a bright, knowing smile—the same smile that had saved our home a decade ago.
