Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Fake Heiress

We spent the rest of the night hiding in a 24-hour laundromat three miles away. Chloe fell asleep across two plastic chairs, exhausted, still holding the empty shell of the rag doll. I sat beside her, staring at my laptop screen, reading and re-reading the files stored on the black USB drive.
It wasn't just videos. Harrison had been meticulous.
The drive contained scanned documents, financial records, and medical reports. As I pieced the story together, a horrifying narrative unfolded. Three years ago, Harrison hadn't just abandoned us for money—he had been targeted.
The real Victoria Sterling had died in a private plane crash in South America four years ago, a tragedy kept quiet by her family's inner circle to prevent a stock collapse. Rachel Collins, a small-time con artist and former body double for wealthy socialites, had been recruited by a corrupt syndicate to step into Victoria’s shoes. She assumed the heiress’s identity, inherited the Sterling fortune, and needed a high-profile husband to solidify her fake status and manage the family’s real estate portfolio.
Harrison had been the perfect mark: ambitious, handsome, and desperate for success. But once he signed the prenuptial agreements and transferred his own business assets into the Sterling trust, he became obsolete.
When Harrison accidentally stumbled upon Rachel’s real birth certificate and proof of the real Victoria’s death, she struck. She didn't kill him—killing a prominent socialite husband would draw federal investigations. Instead, she drugged him, held him captive in the basement of a secluded estate in upstate California, and slowly erased his mind with heavy experimental psychotropics while forging his signature to drain his remaining assets.
He had faked his compliance for months, saving small bits of food, slowly bribing a sympathetic low-level guard with old jewelry he’d hidden, just to mail that rag doll to Chloe.
Among the files was a small spreadsheet labeled Coordinates.

A private estate in Lake Arrowhead.
Harrison was being held there, guarded by private security mercenaries paid with stolen Sterling money. My anger toward the man who left me began to mutate into something else—pity, horror, and a fierce, burning need for justice. He was the father of my child, and he was being systematically destroyed.
