Chapter 8 - Justice in the Dark

Time seemed to slow down to a crawl. As Rachel lunged with the heavy crowbar, aiming directly for my chest, the sheer weight of her betrayal and the memory of my daughter’s freezing tears gave me an unnatural surge of adrenaline.
Before the heavy iron could strike, I sidestepped violently, grabbing her wrist with both hands and twisting it upward with all my might. The crowbar slipped from her grasp, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.
Rachel shrieked, clawing at my face with her free hand, but I caught her other arm, pinning her against the damp foundation wall right beside the open cavity where her uncle’s remains lay hidden.
“It’s over, Rachel,” I whispered directly into her ear, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. “The game is finished.”
Before she could spit another venomous lie, heavy footsteps thundered down the cellar stairs.
“Police! Drop your weapon!” Detective Vance shouted, bursting into the vault with his service weapon drawn, followed by three tactical officers.
Rachel went instantly limp, her bravado shattering into pathetic whimpers as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
“Rachel Davis, you are under arrest for the kidnapping and attempted murder of a minor, the murder of Arthur Pendelton, and conspiracy in the vehicular homicide of Sarah Davis. You have the right to remain silent—” Vance’s voice echoed formally through the cramped stone room as they dragged her toward the exit.
I stood there in the dust and dim light, breathing heavily, looking down at the rusted metal box she had tried so desperately to keep buried. I reached down, my fingers brushing against the cold metal, and lifted it out of the cavity.
Inside weren't just financial documents or deeds. There were signed bank transfer receipts, personal journals detailing every calculated step of her crimes, and the physical evidence linking her directly to the sabotage of my first wife’s vehicle.
Detective Vance walked back into the room, placing a steady hand on my shoulder.

“You okay, Javier?”
I nodded slowly, clutching the box to my chest like a shield. “I need to go to the hospital. My daughter is waiting for me.”
