Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Tunnel

The revelation hung in the damp air of the cellar like a dense, suffocating fog. My mind reeled, trying to piece together the fractured timeline of my own life. I had bought this house five years ago through a real estate broker recommended by Rachel—who was then just an acquaintance, an ambitious interior designer trying to break into high-end Manhattan renovations. She had handled all the closing documents, claiming her uncle was retiring abroad and wanted a quick, clean sale.

“Detective,” I managed to say, my voice raspy and hollow. “Are you telling me Rachel knew about this room before we even moved in?”

“We’re looking into her financial history right now,” Detective Vance replied, pulling a small notebook from his coat pocket. “Her uncle, Arthur Pendelton, vanished off the grid right after the sale. No passport use, no bank withdrawals. But his corporate accounts have been actively funneling money into a shell company controlled by Rachel for the past four years.”

He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Mr. Davis, your wife isn't just a cruel stepmother. She’s been harboring someone beneath your home. And judging by the frantic note on the wall, whoever was down here realized something terrifying about Rachel before they vanished.”

Before I could process the full weight of his words, my phone buzzed in my hand. It was an alert from the private security firm guarding Sophia’s hospital room.

“Sir, we have an issue. A woman disguised as a nurse tried to enter the ward ten minutes ago. We detained her, but she managed to drop something before security guards pinned her down. It’s a set of keys with your home address tag.”

Ice flooded my veins.

“Is Sophia safe?” I shouted into the phone, ignoring the detective’s inquiring look.

“She’s completely safe, sir. The door was locked, and the nurse on duty recognized the protocol immediately. The police are already taking the intruder into custody at the hospital.”

“Hold every exit,” I ordered, hanging up instantly. I looked at Detective Vance. “That wasn't Rachel in the precinct. Or at least… Rachel has an accomplice.”

Detective Vance’s expression hardened into pure professional focus. He turned to his radio.

“All units, verify the identity of the female suspect currently detained at the 19th Precinct and cross-check the hospital intruder report. We might have a second player involved.”

Within minutes, the radio crackled back to life.

“Detective, this is Officer Miller at the precinct. We have a problem. The woman we locked up in holding cell three… she’s not Rachel.”

“Explain,” Vance barked into his lapel mic.

“She gave a false ID. Her fingerprints just hit the national database. Her real name is Clara Vance—no relation to you, boss. She’s Rachel’s twin sister. And according to our records, Clara was legally declared dead in a psychiatric facility fire in upstate New York six years ago.”
