Chapter 10 - A Future Full of Light
Lily’s ninth birthday party was held in our backyard two months later.
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon. The yard was filled with Lily’s classmates from school, colorful banners, and a massive cake shaped like a roller coaster.
My parents arrived early. They looked nervous, carrying a shiny new pink bicycle with bright ribbon tassels on the handlebars.
When Lily came out onto the patio, my father took a deep breath, walked over to her, and knelt down on the grass—something I had never seen him do for anyone.
"Lily," my father said, his voice thick with emotion. "Grandpa and Grandma made a very big mistake two months ago. We hurt your feelings, and we were unfair to you. We are so, so sorry. You are our precious granddaughter, and we love you very much."
Lily looked at the bicycle, then at her grandparents. She walked forward and gave my father a small, gentle hug.
"Thank you, Grandpa," she said softly. "I accept your apology."
My mother burst into tears, wrapping her arms around both of them.
Later that afternoon, as the kids laughed and played in the yard, Arthur Vance stopped by the party to deliver a custom framed picture from our VIP day at Wonderland Kingdom—a photo of Lily and me sitting on the front car of the roller coaster, both of us laughing with our arms thrown wide in the air.
I stood on the porch, holding a glass of iced tea, watching Lily ride her new bicycle down the driveway with her friends cheering her on.
My mother walked up beside me, placing a hand gently on my shoulder.
"You built an incredible life for her, Maya," my mother whispered, her voice filled with genuine pride for the first time in thirty years. "You're an amazing mother."
I smiled, taking a sip of my tea, feeling the warmth of the sun on my face.
"I know," I replied softly.

The road to get here had been painful, filled with tears and quiet heartbreaks. But as I watched my daughter’s face light up with pure, unshadowed joy under the bright afternoon sky, I knew that the dark chapters were officially behind us.
Lily knew her worth now. I knew mine. And no one would ever take it away from us again.
