Chapter 8 - A New Dawn for Toby

Three weeks later, the hospital was a distant memory. The Sinclair family had packed up their suburban home, leaving behind the city that held the ghosts of the Vance family legacy. They didn't need the money from the sale; Ethan’s secured Vanguard accounts provided a level of wealth that surpassed anything Arthur Vance could have ever dreamed of, but without the blood and corruption attached to it.

They relocated to a breathtaking coastal town in the Pacific Northwest, where the air smelled of salt and pine trees, and the mountains rose out of the mist like ancient guardians.

Their new home was a beautiful, expansive timber-frame house overlooking a quiet bay. It had a massive backyard filled with towering fir trees, perfect for building the grandest treehouse imaginable. There were no security cameras, no high iron fences, and no private contractors patrolling the grounds. The only security they needed was the quiet, watchful presence of Ethan, who walked the perimeter every morning not out of fear, but out of a deep sense of peaceful stewardship.

Toby’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. The physical scars had faded into tiny, barely visible lines that added character to his young face, but the emotional scars were what Ethan and Isabelle worked hardest to heal.

Every afternoon, Ethan and Toby would walk down to the rocky beach. Ethan taught his son how to skip stones across the calm water, how to identify the eagles nesting in the high branches, and how to skip stones across the surf.

"Dad?" Toby asked one afternoon, holding a smooth, flat stone in his hand.

"Yeah, buddy?" Ethan replied, looking down at his son, whose cheeks were flushed with health and happiness.

"Are we going to stay here forever?"

Ethan looked out over the vast, glittering expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue, the sun warming the cool breeze. For the first time in his entire life, Ethan felt no shadows looming behind him. Marcus had confirmed that the Vanguard files were permanently archived, the Agency had closed the book on Echo Six, and the Vance family was entirely extinct from the social and financial landscape.

"We're staying as long as you want, Toby," Ethan said, putting his arm around his son's shoulders. "This is our home now."

Toby nodded, satisfied, and threw the stone. It skipped four times across the water before sinking into the calm blue, leaving behind small, widening circles of peace.
