Chapter 7 - The Trial of Shadows

The next forty-eight hours were a whirlwind of systemic destruction that the public viewed as a sudden, shocking corporate collapse, but which Ethan knew was the precise execution of a Vanguard erasure.
By noon the following day, the morning news was dominated by headlines of the Vance empire's ruin. The federal government had unsealed a massive, multi-count indictment against Arthur Vance for money laundering, fraud, and racketeering. His assets were frozen globally. The local police chief, a long-time beneficiary of Vance’s payroll, was seen on television being led away in handcuffs by federal agents.
Jasper and Kyle Vance had vanished from the public eye completely. The official report stated they were fugitives fleeing the jurisdiction, but Ethan received a single encrypted text from Marcus: Targets processed. Located in a high-security holding facility in North Dakota. Classification: Permanent.
Arthur Vance was arrested in his study, unable to afford the retainer for his high-priced attorneys. The empire built on arrogance and violence had folded like a house of cards.
Meanwhile, at Saint Luke Medical Center, the atmosphere had completely changed. The chaos of the emergency room had given way to the quiet, healing peace of a private recovery wing. Ethan had used his secure channels to transfer Toby to a top-tier private room, staffed by the best pediatric neurologists in the state, paid for through untraceable offshore trusts.
Ethan sat by Toby’s bedside, holding his small hand. The swelling on the boy's face had gone down significantly, the deep purple bruises turning to a lighter, healing yellow. The doctors had delivered the best possible news: the brain swelling had subsided completely, and there would be no long-term neurological damage. Toby’s youth and resilience had won the battle.
Isabelle sat on the other side of the bed, brushing Toby’s hair away from his forehead. The trauma of the past two days had brought a profound vulnerability to her face, but also a newfound strength. She had completely cut ties with the remnants of her family, choosing instead the man who had stood as a wall between them and destruction.
Toby stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He looked at his mother, then turned his head to look at Ethan. A small, tentative smile formed on his lips.
"Hey, Dad," Toby whispered, his voice stronger than it had been two nights ago.
"Hey, buddy," Ethan said, leaning forward, his heart swelling with an emotion so intense it brought tears to his eyes—tears he hadn't shed even in the darkest corners of his black-ops past. "How are you feeling?"
"Better," Toby said, looking around the bright, comfortable room. "The bad dreams are gone."
Ethan squeezed his hand gently. "They aren't coming back, Toby. I promise you. Grandpa and the uncles... they had to go away for a very long time. They're never going to hurt you, or Mommy, or anyone ever again."
Toby looked deep into his father's eyes, seeing the absolute certainty there. "Because you protected us?"

"Always," Ethan said. "That's my job."
Isabelle looked across the bed at Ethan, her eyes filled with a mixture of awe, gratitude, and a quiet, profound love. She didn't know every detail of the man Ethan used to be, and she didn't need to. She knew who he was now: the protector of their family, a man who would tear down the world to keep them safe.
