Chapter 8 - The Final Reckoning

Three months later, the legal battles came to a swift and decisive end.

With the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, domestic violence, and child medical neglect, the court ruled entirely in my favor. Mark was sentenced to three years in federal prison for financial fraud, with an additional eighteen months for domestic battery. His father, Edward, received five years due to his leading role in the corporate embezzlement scheme.

Patricia, left penniless after all their assets were seized to pay off millions in bank debts, was forced to move into a small, rented apartment on the outskirts of the city, abandoned by all her high-society friends who wanted nothing to do with the scandal.

On the day the final divorce decree was signed, I sat in Richard Sterling’s office, signing the last page that officially granted me sole legal custody of Lily, along with restoring my maiden name, Claire Vance.

“It’s completely over, Claire,” Richard said with a warm smile, closing the file. “Mark has signed away all parental rights in exchange for dropping secondary civil suit damages. You and Lily are entirely free.”

I took a deep breath, feeling a massive weight lift off my chest. “Thank you, Richard. For everything.”

When I left the law firm, my father was waiting in the lobby with Lily, who was holding a giant chocolate ice cream cone, laughing happily.

“Look, Mommy!” Lily cheered, running up to me with a beaming smile. “Grandpa bought me the biggest ice cream in the world!”

I knelt down and pulled her into a warm embrace, kissing her forehead. Her skin was cool, her cheeks rosy with healthy child energy, and her eyes sparkled with pure joy.

“You deserve all the ice cream in the world, sweetie,” I said softly.

My father looked down at us with eyes full of love. “Come on, girls. Let’s go check on the new project.”
