Chapter 4 - Ghosts of the Past

By 2:00 AM, Lily’s temperature had dropped to a safe 98.6°F, and she was sleeping peacefully in her hospital bed. I sat beside her, holding her warm, soft hand, feeling a sense of peace I hadn't felt in years.
My father entered the room quietly, carrying two cups of warm tea. He handed one to me and sat in the chair opposite the bed.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” I murmured, keeping my voice low. “You tried to warn me about Mark years ago.”
“You were young and in love, Claire,” my father said gently. “You wanted to prove that you could build a life without relying on my name or my wealth. I respected your independence, even if it broke my heart to watch you walk away. But I never truly left you. I had people keeping an eye on you from a distance.”
I looked at him in surprise. “You did?”
“Of course I did. You are my daughter,” he smiled softly. “I knew Mark’s family was struggling, but I hoped Mark would treat you with the respect you deserved. When I received a report a few months ago that Mark was becoming controlling and financially abusive, I began investigating his family’s finances. I was waiting for the right moment to intervene, but I never imagined he would lay a hand on you or neglect Lily.”
His eyes turned stern. “Tomorrow morning, the Stantons will realize that the innocent, family-less girl they tried to bully is the sole heiress to Vance Enterprises—the very corporation that holds 60% of their debt.”
“What happens now?” I asked.
“Tomorrow, the bank forecloses on their mansion,” my father said simply. “The investors who were at that dinner party tonight will receive anonymous copies of Stanton Global’s real financial records showing massive fraud. And by noon, Mark will be served with divorce papers, a restraining order, and an immediate suit for sole legal and physical custody of Lily.”
I looked down at Lily’s calm, sleeping face. For years, I had endured Patricia’s subtle insults, Mark’s growing coldness, and the suffocating feeling that I was inferior to their high-society life. I had stayed because I wanted Lily to have a complete family. But tonight had proven that staying was the most dangerous thing I could ever do for my child.

“I want to be there when they find out,” I told my father, my voice firm with a newfound strength.
My father looked at me with a proud smile. “Then you shall be, my dear.”
