Chapter 7 - Reclaiming My Voice

The trial lasted four agonizing days, but the most dramatic moment came when the prosecution played the dining room camera footage on the large screens mounted in the courtroom.

Seeing the video again in high definition brought back all the horror. In the quiet courtroom, Evelyn’s voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls: "Open wide for Nana... Down the hatch!"

One of the female jurors covered her mouth in shock. Another juror shook his head in disgust.

Evelyn sat at her table, her eyes fixed firmly on the floor. For the first time, the icy facade slipped, and she looked visibly terrified. She knew the jury was watching her monstrous act in real time.

During the defense’s final presentation, Evelyn surprisingly took the stand against her lawyer’s advice. It was a desperate move by a woman who believed her own charm could manipulate anyone.

"I loved my granddaughter!" Evelyn wept on the stand, clutching a handkerchief. "I would never hurt her! I was confused! The stress of my life... I thought I was giving her sweet treats! Samantha is twisting this because she always wanted to tear my family apart!"

DA Vance stepped up for cross-examination. She didn't raise her voice. She simply pulled out a document.

"Mrs. Vance," DA Vance said smoothly. "If you were confused and thought these were candies, why did you visit three different novelty stores in San Diego to buy high-powered neodymium magnets three days before the incident?"

Evelyn stammered. "I... I bought them for art projects!"

"And why," DA Vance continued, raising her voice slightly, "did you apply for a $500,000 life insurance policy on Nancy two weeks earlier, naming yourself as the sole beneficiary?"

Evelyn’s face turned bright red. "That was for her college! To protect her future!"

"A life insurance policy that only pays out in the event of accidental death or catastrophic organ failure?" DA Vance pressed relentlessly. "Is that how you protect a child's future?"

Evelyn snapped. She slammed her fist on the witness stand, her sweet grandmotherly persona vanishing completely, replaced by pure, unadulterated venom.

"She was taking my son away!" Evelyn screamed, pointing a shaking, manic finger at me in the gallery. "She was taking them to Seattle! I built that family! I deserved custody! She’s an ungrateful, low-class nobody who ruined my son’s life!"

The courtroom gasped. The judge slammed his gavel down repeatedly. "Order in the court! Defendant will control herself!"

Evelyn sank back into her chair, breathing heavily, realizing too late that she had just confessed her true motive to the entire courtroom and jury.

She hadn't had a psychotic break. She had acted out of pure, narcissistic rage and greed.
