Chapter 3 - Interrogations and Betrayal

The arrest of my mother-in-law turned the entire hospital upside down. Evelyn screamed and thrashed as the officers escorted her down the hallway, her designer handbag dropping to the floor, spilling lipstick and compact mirrors across the white tiles.

Brandon stood motionless, staring at the floor as if the world had split open beneath him. He didn't move to help her. He didn't say a word.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," Officer Elliott said, returning after his partner led Evelyn to the squad car. "We need both of you to come down to the station to give formal statements. Social Services will also be involved given the severity of the injury to your daughter."

"I’m staying here," I said firmly, my voice shaking with emotion. "I am not leaving Nancy’s side. She just woke up from surgery. She needs her mother."

"I understand," Officer Elliott nodded compassionately. "We will have a detective come here to take your statement in the family room. Mr. Vance, you’re coming with us."

Brandon looked at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of confusion, guilt, and lingering resentment. "Samantha... I... I didn't know."

"You blamed me," I whispered, the pain spilling over into hot tears on my cheeks. "Without a second thought, Brandon. You stood there and accused me. You didn't even check on Nancy. You just wanted to destroy me."

"I was in shock!" he snapped quietly, trying to defend himself. "My mother told me—"

"Your mother tried to kill our child to frame me!" I shouted, no longer caring who heard me in the hallway. "Get away from me, Brandon. Get out of my sight."

While Nancy slept fitfully in the ICU, connected to heart monitors and IV drips, Detective Sarah Miller interviewed me in a private side room. I provided the full, unedited video file, along with cloud logs proving the timestamp could not have been altered.

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, her pen hovering over a notepad. "Why would your mother-in-law do something so horrific? Is there a history of mental illness, or a financial dispute?"

I buried my face in my hands. The pieces were finally beginning to connect in my mind, forming a picture so dark it horrified me.

"Evelyn never wanted Brandon to marry me," I began, my voice hoarse. "I come from a working-class family. She wanted him to marry into her wealthy social circle. When Nancy was born, Evelyn tried to take over. She wanted full control over how we raised her. Last month, Brandon and I had a fight because I told him I wanted us to move to Seattle—away from his mother’s suffocating influence."

Detective Miller nodded, writing quickly. "Go on."

"Evelyn knew that if I moved away, she’d lose access to Nancy," I continued. "A few weeks ago, she threatened that if I tried to 'separate her from her family,' she would make sure I lost custody. I thought it was just a bitter old woman venting. I never... I never thought she’d hurt Nancy to do it."

"If Nancy ended up in the hospital with severe neglect injuries while under your care," Detective Miller realized, her eyes widening, "Evelyn could call CPS, declare you an unfit, negligent mother, and file for emergency legal custody."

"Yes," I sobbed. "She fed my baby magnets... just to win a custody battle."

Later that evening, Detective Miller returned with an update from Brandon’s interrogation. What she revealed made my blood run cold.

When the police searched Evelyn’s purse, they found a second container of the same magnetic beads, along with a printed draft of a legal petition for emergency guardianship of Nancy—dated three days before Nancy was rushed to the hospital.

Evelyn hadn't acted on impulse. This was a calculated, cold-blooded execution of a plot to destroy my life and steal my child.
