Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Suite

The lock clicking into place sounded like a gunshot in the silent room.

Jim moved first, sliding his bulk in front of the front door, his arms crossed over his chest, blocking our only obvious exit. His face was flushed, dark patches of sweat staining his linen shirt.

Bruce slowly pulled the leather gloves onto his fingers, flexing his hands with a methodical, chilling calmness that chilled me to the bone. This wasn't the man I had slept beside for sixteen years. This was a stranger wearing my husband's skin.

"Bruce, please," I begged, my voice trembling as I stepped between him and Lily, who was now weeping softly against my leg. "Whatever you're mixed up in, we can fix it. We can go to the authorities together. We can tell them you were forced into this!"

Bruce let out a short, humorless laugh that held no warmth whatsoever. "Fix it? Claire, look around you. There's nothing to fix. I've spent four years building a safety net so we would never have to worry about money again. And you... you let a seven-year-old ruin it in ten minutes."

"You brought a bleeding man into our room!" I screamed, the terror finally breaking through my composure. "You made our daughter a witness to a murder!"

"He's not dead," Jim barked from the door, his eyes darting nervously toward the balcony. "Not yet, anyway. Arthur is downstairs in the maintenance room. We moved him while you were playing around in the lobby."

Clara took a step forward, her stun gun raised, pointing it directly at Bruce's chest. "Where is he, Jim? Where is my brother?"

Bruce didn't even blink at the sight of the weapon. He took a single, deliberate step toward Clara. "Put that toy away, Clara. You’re out of your depth. You thought you could double-cross us with the Coast Guard? You think those marshals out on the cutter are coming to save you? Their radio frequencies have been jammed since noon. Nobody is coming to this room."

Clara’s hand shook, but her gaze remained firm. "The drive is already uploaded to a secure cloud server on a delayed timer. If I don't punch in a security clearance code every two hours, the entire ledger goes straight to the Department of Justice."

Bruce paused. A momentary shadow of doubt crossed his face, but he quickly suppressed it, stepping closer to Clara until the metal prongs of the stun gun were inches from his chest.

"You're lying," Bruce said softly. "Arthur had the physical flash drive on him when Jim hit him over the head in the lounge. We checked his pockets. The drive wasn't there. Which means it's still in this room, or Arthur hid it somewhere before he lost consciousness."

My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked around the pristine luxury suite—the plush white couches, the mahogany tables, the king-sized bed visible through the open bedroom doorway. If the drive was in this room, and if Bruce found it, Clara and I were completely useless to them.

"Bruce," I said, trying to draw his attention back to me. "Let Lily leave. She doesn't know anything. Take me, do whatever you want with me, but let Jim take Lily down to the beach. Please. I am begging you as her mother."

Bruce looked down at Lily. For a brief second, something soft flickered in his eyes—a ghost of the father who used to carry her on his shoulders at the park, who taught her how to ride a bicycle without training wheels. But just as quickly, that ghost vanished behind a curtain of cold, mercenary calculation.

"She talked to you, Claire," Bruce said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "She told you about the man in the tub. She's a smart girl. Too smart. If she talks to the police, my life is over. Jim's life is over."

"She’s seven years old!" I shrieked, horror surging through my veins. "She's your daughter!"

"And that's why I'm going to make sure she stays safe," Bruce said, stepping toward me. "With us. We are leaving this island tonight on a private vessel. All of us. Together. You, me, and Lily. But Clara... Clara stays here."

Before Clara could react, Jim lunged forward from the door with surprising speed for a man his size. He grabbed Clara’s wrist, twisting it violently until she cried out in pain and dropped the stun gun onto the carpet. Jim kicked the device under the sofa, pinned Clara’s arms behind her back, and slammed her against the wall.

"Get the zip-ties from the bag, Bruce!" Jim grunted, holding the struggling woman down.

"Daddy, stop! Stop it!" Lily shrieked, burying her head against my waist, her body shaking violently with sobs.

Bruce pulled a pack of heavy-duty plastic zip-ties from his jacket pocket. He walked toward Clara, completely ignoring my cries.

I knew this was our only moment. Once Clara was bound and secure, Bruce and Jim would turn their full attention to pacifying me and isolating Lily. I couldn't let them take us onto a boat. If we stepped onto that boat, we would never come back.

My eyes darted across the room. On the marble nightstand near the bedroom door sat a heavy bronze statue of an anchor—a decorative paperweight the resort used to keep guest paperwork down.

I didn't think. I didn't hesitate.

I reached out, grabbed the heavy bronze anchor by its base, swung it with all the strength in my body, and slammed it directly into the side of Bruce's knee.

A sickening crack echoed through the suite.

Bruce let out a agonizing yell, his knee buckling instantly as he collapsed onto the carpet, clutching his leg in agony.

"Run, Clara! Run!" I screamed, grabbing Lily by the arm and sprinting toward the open balcony doors.
