Chapter 1 - The Echoes Behind Room 408

My Daughter Said Daddy and Uncle Jim Had Made Her Keep a Secret About Our Hotel Room. I Thought It Was a Harmless Surprise—Until Her Innocent Explanation Made Me Look Toward the Beach in Horror.
“Mommy, Daddy said I must never tell you what he and Uncle Jim did in our hotel room.”
My seven-year-old daughter, Lily, whispered the words while gripping the side of my beach dress. Her eyes kept darting toward my husband, Bruce, and his older brother, Jim, who were laughing beside the hotel bar as though they had not done anything wrong.
I crouched in front of her.
“What did they do, sweetheart?”
Lily lowered her voice. “Daddy said it was a grown-up game.”
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of game?”
“They carried a sleeping man into our bathroom.”
For a moment, I could not process the sentence.
“A sleeping man?”
She nodded. “Uncle Jim held his feet. Daddy held his arms. The man’s head kept falling backward.”
I forced myself to remain calm. “When did you see this?”
“When you went downstairs to get sunscreen.”
That had been almost an hour earlier.
Lily continued in the innocent, careful way children explain something they do not understand.
“The man had blood near his hair. Daddy put him in the bathtub. Uncle Jim took his wallet and phone. Then Daddy saw me standing by the door.”
My mouth went dry.
“He told me the man was playing a prank,” she said. “But the man didn’t laugh.”
I looked toward the beach.
Bruce raised his drink and smiled at me.
Jim waved.
Neither man looked frightened.
Neither man looked guilty.
They looked confident.
“Where are the wallet and phone now?” I asked.
Lily pointed toward Jim’s blue beach bag under his chair.
Before I could move, Bruce started walking toward us.
His smile stayed in place, but his eyes were fixed on Lily.
“What are you two talking about?” he asked.
Lily pressed herself against me.
I stood and took her hand.
“Nothing,” I said. “She wants to go back to the room.”
Bruce stepped directly into my path.
“No,” he said quietly. “She doesn’t.”
Then Jim reached into the blue bag, pulled out a cracked phone that did not belong to either of them, and started walking toward the ocean.
I knew immediately what he intended to do.
But before I could shout, the phone began ringing in his hand.
And the name glowing across the screen belonged to a woman who was supposed to have disappeared three weeks ago.

Lily had revealed only the first part of what she witnessed inside that room. The ringing phone was about to connect my husband to a secret far more dangerous than I could have imagined
