Chapter 5 - Shattered Trust and Broken Chains

The next few days were an agonizing whirlwind. Grace had to undergo medical evaluations and psychological screenings. She was physically healthy, though slightly underweight, but the psychological damage was deep. She had been told for two years that she was an unwanted burden, that her mother had abandoned her.

I spent every second by her side. We slept in the same bed, our fingers intertwined. Whenever she woke up screaming from a nightmare, I was there to hold her, whispering, "I'm here, Grace. I'm never leaving."

Slowly, the truth about her captivity came to light. Neil had placed her in "The Whispering Pines Academy," a remote, highly secretive private facility in the mountains of Oregon. It was a school that advertised "absolute privacy for troubled youths," but in reality, it was a high-priced warehouse for families who wanted to make their children disappear.

"They didn't hit me," Grace whispered one evening as we watched the sunset from the porch. "But they made me feel like I didn't exist. If I asked about you, they would lock me in my room and tell me I was being ungrateful. Dad told me that if I ever tried to contact you, the police would arrest you because you hated me so much you'd sue us."

"Oh, baby," I cried, pulling her into my lap, even though she was getting too big for it. "He twisted everything. He was the monster, not you. Not me."

"I know that now," she said, resting her head against my chest. "When I saw you in the principal's office... the look in your eyes. I knew right then that he had lied. You didn't hate me. You were dying without me."

"I was," I admitted. "But now, I have a reason to live again."
