Chapter 10 - The Light After the Dark

Two years have passed since Grace walked into the principal's office. Today is her fifteenth birthday.
The backyard of our coastal cottage is decorated with fairy lights and colorful lanterns. The sound of laughter echoes over the soft crash of the waves nearby. A few of Grace’s new school friends are gathered around the picnic table, their faces bright and carefree.
I stand on the back porch, watching her. She is taller now, her hair long and shining in the golden hour light. She laughs at a joke, her smile radiant and unobstructed by the shadows of her past. She is a normal teenager—healing, thriving, and deeply loved.
Detective Marcus Vance, who has become a close family friend, steps up next to me, holding a cup of punch.
"She looks happy, Helen," he says softly.
"She is," I reply, my heart swelling with a peace I once thought was entirely lost to me. "We both are."
Grace catches my eye from across the yard. She waves, her smile widening, and points to the cake.
"Mom! Come on, it's time to blow out the candles!" she calls out.

"Coming, baby!" I call back.
As I walk down the porch steps to join my daughter, I look up at the clear evening sky. The grief that once consumed me is gone, replaced by a deep, immovable gratitude. We had walked through the deepest valley of death, and against all odds, we had found our way back to the light.
