Chapter 8 - The Weight of Truth

Over the next three weeks, the house underwent a radical transformation. Without Ashley’s constant demands for superficial luxury and status-driven posturing, the atmosphere shifted from a tense, fragile showroom into a genuine, warm home.
True to his word, Ryan reported to Miller’s Garage at six o'clock every morning. He learned how to change oil, patch tires, and diagnose engine troubles under my father’s watchful, demanding eye. He came home every evening covered in grease, smelling of motor oil and honest labor—and for the first time in his life, he walked with his head held high. He wasn't pretending to be a wealthy corporate heir anymore; he was a working man building a real life for himself and his daughter.
Ashley tried to launch a bitter custody battle through her parents' high-priced divorce lawyers, hoping to use Lily as a weapon to force Ryan to capitulate. But Robert and Denise Vance soon realized that public perception cuts both ways. Meanwhile, Lily thrived in the restored peace of her grandfather’s house. Without the constant anxiety of walking on eggshells, her laughter echoed through the hallways every single afternoon.
