Chapter 6 - A House Divided

The living room fell into a stunned silence. Ashley stared at Ryan as if he had grown a second head. For seven years, Ryan had been her obedient echo, nodding along to every social ambition, every snide remark, every demand for luxury they couldn’t afford.
“You’re choosing him over me? Over your wife and daughter?” Ashley’s voice cracked with hysterical disbelief.
“I’m choosing reality, Ashley,” Ryan said, stepping past her and walking over to stand directly in front of my father. Ryan dropped his gaze in deep, genuine remorse. “Grandpa... I am so, so sorry. I’m sorry I let her talk to you like that. I’m sorry I sat there like a coward and didn't defend you. You gave us everything, and we acted like spoiled, ungrateful brats. I don’t expect you to forgive me today. But I’m not leaving. And if Ashley wants to leave because she can’t stand living under the roof of an honest working man, that’s her choice.”
Ashley let out a harsh, bitter laugh, her eyes flashing with pure venom. “Fine! Enjoy your garage fumes and your broken-down cars! Don’t expect me to stay a single second longer in this dump! I’m taking Lily!”
“No, you’re not,” I stepped forward, my voice cold and unyielding. “Lily stays right here with her father and her great-grandfather. You are free to pack your designer bags and go back to your parents’ mansion, Ashley. But you are not dragging an innocent five-year-old child into your temper tantrum because your ego got bruised.”
“She’s my daughter!” Ashley screamed, lunging forward.
“She is part of this family, Ashley,” Dad said, his deep voice stopping her in her tracks. He stood up slowly, towering over her with quiet dignity. “And in this house, we don’t run away from our problems, and we don’t use children as leverage. If you walk out that door right now, you go alone. If you want to stay, you apologize to every single person in this room—starting with the man you told to wash his grease off.”
Ashley looked around the room. Her parents were gone. Her husband had broken the spell of her dominance. Her leverage was completely gone. She was trapped by her own pride.

With a final, venomous glare that could have melted steel, Ashley grabbed her designer handbag off the sofa. “You’ll regret this. All of you. You’re pathetic, every single one of you.”
She stormed to the front door, wrenched it open, and slammed it behind her so hard the picture frames on the wall rattled.
