Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and Healing

When we walked out of the building, the afternoon sun felt warmer than usual. The weight that had been sitting on my chest since my fifteenth birthday was finally gone.

The venture capital merger went through two weeks later without a single hitch. Aura Logistics expanded, and I was able to set up a corporate foundation. I named it The Safe Haven Fund, a charity dedicated to providing housing, education, and legal support for teenagers who had been abandoned or kicked out by their families.

One evening, a few months later, I was sitting on the porch of our home, watching Mark and Noah build a treehouse in the backyard. The air smelled of freshly cut wood and summer rain.

Mark climbed down the ladder, wiping sweat from his forehead, and walked over to me. He handed me a glass of iced tea and sat down on the swing beside me.

"You're quiet tonight," he said, smiling.

"Just thinking," I said, leaning my head on his shoulder. "For a long time, I thought that porch was the end of my story. I thought I was defined by being thrown away."

"Now I know it was just the prologue," I said, watching Noah laugh as he tried to hammer a nail. "This is the real story."
