Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The day after the party, I tried to focus on work. My company, Aura Logistics, was in the middle of finalizing a major venture capital merger. It was the culmination of ten years of sleepless nights, tears, and relentless hustle. I had built a smart-tracking software that was changing the industry.

Around 2:00 PM, my assistant, Claire, buzzed my desk. "Sarah, there's a certified letter here for you. It looks... official. From a legal firm."

My stomach dropped. I told her to bring it in.

The letterhead read: Vance & Associates, Family Law. I ripped it open. It was a formal demand for filial support, citing parental abandonment and severe financial distress. David was demanding $50,000 upfront and a monthly stipend of $4,000. Appended to the letter were fabricated medical bills and a narrative that painted me as a ungrateful, wealthy elite who left her sick father to starve.

I immediately called our corporate attorney and close friend, Elena. Within an hour, she was sitting in my office, reviewing the papers.

"Can he actually do this?" I asked, pacing the floor. "He threw me out! I have the police reports from when my aunt found me on the porch!"

Elena sighed, rubbing her temples. "In this state, filial responsibility laws technically exist, though they are rarely enforced. The real danger isn't the court ruling, Sarah. It's the PR. Look at this clause. They are threatening to file this publicly by the end of the week. If the venture capitalists see a messy, scandalous lawsuit involving elder abuse allegations, they might pull out of the merger. David knows this. It's extortion."

"I won't give him a single penny," I said, my voice trembling with anger. "If I give him $50,000, he’ll just come back for more."

"I agree," Elena said, her eyes sharpening. "But we need to play this smart. We need to dig up everything on David. Why now? Why suddenly show up after twenty years? A man like him doesn't just wake up and decide he wants to be a father—or a sue-happy victim. He's desperate for a reason."

"Find it," I said. "Whatever it takes."
