Chapter 5 - Confrontation on the Porch

"Ashley?" Dan stammered, taking a step backward until his back hit my hallway wall. "What are you... how did you get here? What is going on?"

"You thought you could dump your children on your sister and pretend you were a single bachelor again?" Ashley asked, stepping into the house, her voice steady and laced with absolute contempt. "You thought wrong, Dan."

Dominic stepped past Ashley, holding out the manila envelope toward my brother.

"Daniel Miller," Dominic said with formal gravity, "you are hereby served with notice of emergency custody proceedings, petition for termination of unilateral abandonment, and a restraining order prohibiting you from attempting to remove the children from their current legal residence in Michigan."

Dan stared at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake. He refused to reach out and take it, so Dominic simply dropped it onto the small console table by the front door.

"What is this?" Dan muttered, his voice trembling now, the veneer of cool indifference completely shattered. "You can't do this. Those are my kids!"

"You forfeited any moral right to call yourself their father the moment you drove away from this porch without looking back," Dominic replied sharply. "The court will review your text messages, your admission of abandonment, and your complete lack of financial and emotional support over the past six months. You will have an opportunity to present your case at the hearing next month, but I strongly advise you to secure legal representation—though given your financial situation, I doubt you can afford a competent family lawyer."

Dan looked frantically between Dominic, Ashley, and me.

"Claire, tell them," Dan pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation as he turned to me. "Tell them this is insane. We're siblings! You can't let her take them to Michigan permanently!"

I looked straight into his eyes. The little brother I used to protect, the one I had bailed out of stupid mistakes for years, was gone. There was only a selfish man facing the consequences of his own cruel actions.

"You made your choice on Friday, Dan," I said quietly. "You told me I got motherhood without having to find a man first. Well, Ashley and her parents are giving those children the real family you refused to be. Game over."

Dan’s face contorted with anger. He pointed a shaking finger at Ashley. "This isn't over! I'm their father! I'll fight this in court! I'll tell everyone you're unstable!"

"Go ahead," Ashley said calmly. "The judge loves reading text messages that say 'Stop being selfish, those kids need you' combined with 'I'm out of pocket for a few days focusing on my music.' Good luck explaining that to a family court judge."

Realizing he had completely boxed himself into a corner with his own written words, Dan cursed under his breath, shoved past Dominic on the porch, and stormed down to his car. Tires screeching loudly, he peeled away from the curb, his old sedan rattling violently down the street until it disappeared from sight.
