Chapter 9 - Looking Forward

Later that night, after all the guests had left and the bakery had gone quiet, Lily and I sat on the living room rug by the Christmas tree. The soft glow of the fairy lights cast a warm, multicolored pattern across the walls.

Lily rested her head in my lap, playing idly with the soft fur of Mr. Fluff, who still occupied a place of honor on her bed upstairs.

"Mom?" she murmured, her eyelids growing heavy.

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Do you think we'll ever see them again?"

The question hung in the air, delicate and fragile. I stroked her hair gently, feeling the steady, healthy rhythm of her breathing.

"No, honey," I said softly, looking out the window at the quiet, snowy street where the streetlights glowed like golden lanterns. "The court orders protect us completely. They can't come near us. And even if they tried... they would find out that you have an entire army standing behind you."

Lily smiled sleepily, her eyes fluttering shut. "I don't need an army. I just have you."

"And I will always, always come when you call," I whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

She drifted off to sleep right there on the rug, safe, warm, and surrounded by light.

I looked over at the kitchen counter where, exactly one year ago, a cruel, handwritten note had been left to justify neglect and abandonment. That note was long gone—shredded and thrown away, replaced by memories of laughter, school plays, baking flour on our noses, and a home built on unconditional love.
