Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

The clock on the mantel ticked closer to midnight. The snow outside fell in thick, silent flakes, burying the cold past and blanketing the world in clean, white promise.
I picked Lily up gently in my arms, carrying her down the short hallway to her lavender-painted bedroom. I slid her under the heavy down blankets, tucking Mr. Fluff beside her. She didn't stir; she just murmured something happy in her sleep and curled into a comfortable ball.
I walked back out to the living room, standing by the window that looked out over the cobblestone street. A few late-night carolers were walking past, their voices drifting up in a sweet, harmonious melody that blended with the quiet hum of the bakery downstairs.
Mark and Vanessa were spending their Christmas in a cold, sterile holding facility three hundred miles away—isolated, forgotten, and reaping the exact consequences of the selfish choices they had sown. They had wanted a "peaceful Christmas" without responsibilities, free of what they called a burden. In doing so, they had thrown away the greatest gift they were ever given.
But here, in this warm, fragrant apartment filled with light and laughter, true peace had finally found its way home.

I switched off the lamps, leaving only the soft, multicolored glow of the Christmas tree illuminating the room. I settled into the armchair by the window, wrapping a thick wool blanket around my shoulders, and smiled into the quiet dark.
We had made it. We were safe. And tomorrow, the sun would rise on a brand new day—together.
