Chapter 5 - The Investigation Unfolds

Sergeant Miller was a consummate professional. She handled the situation with a delicate balance of strict police procedure and genuine empathy. She didn't rush us, and she made sure Chloe felt comfortable before asking any questions.

We sat around the kitchen table. Chloe sat between Meredith and me, holding both of our hands tightly while Sergeant Miller gently questioned her. The detective used a special, non-leading protocol designed for child victims, allowing Chloe to explain in her own words what had happened, when it started, and how Richard had threatened her to keep her silent.

As Chloe spoke—her small voice trembling slightly but remaining remarkably clear—I watched Sergeant Miller’s expression harden. By the time Chloe finished recounting how her grandfather had told her that "family secrets stay in the family," the detective’s pen was still against her notepad, her knuckles white.

“Thank you, Chloe,” Sergeant Miller said softly, offering a reassuring smile. “You are a very brave girl. You did the exact right thing by telling your dad.”

She looked up at Meredith and me. “We have enough initial testimony and physical documentation—we took photographs of the marks upstairs—to issue an immediate arrest warrant for Richard Vance. Furthermore, I’m putting out an APN (All Points Notice) for his vehicle across county lines. We’ll find him.”

“What about jurisdiction?” I asked, leaning forward. “He lives about twenty minutes away in the neighboring township.”

“Our department coordinates closely with the county sheriff,” Sergeant Miller replied confidently. “Given the nature of the suspect and the immediate flight from the scene, this is our top priority. I’m assigning Detective Ramos to stay with your family for the next few hours while we track his phone and monitor his known locations.”

True to her word, within an hour, a plainclothes detective named Ramos stationed himself near our front entrance while Sergeant Miller coordinated the manhunt.

Meredith excused herself to make some tea, though none of us touched it. The hours crawled by in agonizing slow motion. Every time a car drove past our house, my muscles tensed. I kept replaying my entire childhood in my head, searching for clues, warning signs, anything I might have missed.

My father had always been distant with me, demanding perfection, punishing failure with cold silence rather than physical blows. I had always assumed he was just a stern, old-school educator who cared deeply about academic success. I never imagined that the coldness I experienced was just a symptom of something far more sinister, something he had eventually turned toward the most vulnerable member of our family when he thought nobody was watching.

At around 3:00 PM, my phone buzzed on the kitchen table.

It was an unknown number, but caller ID indicated it was routed through the county dispatcher's office. I answered it immediately, putting it on speaker so Meredith and Detective Ramos could hear.

“Mr. Vance?” a sharp, authoritative voice asked. “This is Captain Vance—no relation—from the County Sheriff’s Department. We’ve located your father’s vehicle.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Where is he?”

“He pulled into the parking lot of the old St. Jude’s Community Center off Highway 9,” the captain said. “Our cruisers have him boxed in. He’s currently sitting inside his vehicle refusing to step out, but our negotiators are talking to him right now. We wanted to inform you immediately before local news vans pick up police scanner chatter.”

“Is he armed?” Detective Ramos asked sharply, leaning into the phone.

“We can’t confirm at this moment, but tactical units are on the scene just in case,” the captain replied. “Mr. Vance, stay at your residence. We will update you the moment he is in custody.”

The call ended, leaving us in a tense, suffocating vacuum of anticipation. The climax of our nightmare was approaching, and there was nothing left for us to do except wait to see how it would all end.
