Chapter 1 - The Revelation

My name is Harrison Vance, and the most frightening day of my life started with a text from my eight-year-old daughter. I was in my bedroom finishing getting ready for Chloe’s spring piano recital when my phone vibrated on top of the dresser. The message was brief, yet something about it instantly felt off.
“Dad, can you help me with my dress zipper? Come to my room. Just you. Close the door.”
Chloe usually packed her messages with emojis and silly spelling errors. This one sounded deliberate, almost practiced, and it made my stomach knot before I even stepped out of the room.
As I walked down the hallway, my wife Meredith called from downstairs. “Everything on schedule up there, Harrison?”
“Just finishing up,” I replied. Even to me, my voice sounded unusual.
The moment I stepped into Chloe’s room, I knew something was terribly wrong. Her recital dress rested untouched across a chair. Rather than getting dressed, Chloe stood beside the window gripping her phone tightly with both hands. Her face looked pale, and she seemed absolutely terrified.
“Hey, kiddo,” I said. “Need help with the zipper?”
She slowly shook her head. “I lied about the zipper.”
The fear in her voice instantly wiped every other thought from my mind. “Dad, I need you to look at something,” she whispered. “But you have to promise you won’t freak out.”
My heart started pounding. “What is it, sweetheart?”
Instead of replying, she quietly turned around. With shaking hands, Chloe raised the back of her shirt. My whole world froze.
Several concerning marks stretched across her ribs and lower back. Some had already begun fading, while others appeared more recent. It was immediately clear to me that these weren't the kind of ordinary marks a child might get from playing or an accidental fall. The pattern made my heart sink. Someone had handled my daughter roughly enough to leave visible marks on her skin.
For one brief moment, a wave of anger surged through me. I desperately wanted to know who was responsible. But when I looked into Chloe’s frightened eyes, I realized she wasn't waiting for anger. She was waiting to see whether I would believe her.
I forced myself to remain calm and knelt beside her. “How long has this been happening?”

A single tear rolled down her cheek. “Since February.”
Then she quietly spoke the name. “Grandpa Richard.”
