Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

With the trial behind us, we needed a fresh start. The house we had been renting was filled with too many memories of the days I spent working myself to the bone, leaving Lily with people who didn't love her.
With my father's help, we made a big decision. We sold our things, packed up our lives, and moved to a beautiful coastal town in Oregon, close to where my father lived.
It was a different world. The air was salty and clean, the towering pine trees met the rugged ocean cliffs, and the pace of life was wonderfully slow. I managed to secure a job at a local, family-owned pharmacy. The owners were incredibly understanding of my situation; they insisted that family came first, allowing me to work flexible hours so I could always be there to pick Lily up from school.
We bought a small, cozy cottage with a big backyard that looked out toward the woods. Lily fell in love with it instantly.
She began attending a small local school where the teachers were informed of her past but focused entirely on her bright future. Within weeks, she had made friends. She joined an art club, her drawings transforming from quiet, muted pencil sketches to vibrant, joyful watercolors of the ocean, the trees, and our new home.
We also continued her therapy. Her therapist, a kind man named Dr. Aris, helped her process the lingering feelings of betrayal.
"Mommy," Lily asked me one evening as we sat on our porch watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of pink and gold. "Do you think Aunt Ashley and Grandma are mad at us?"
I sat down next to her, pulling her into my lap. "It doesn't matter if they are, sweetie. What matters is that they can never hurt you or anyone else again. They have to face the consequences of what they did. We are safe now."
May you like
"I like it here," she whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder. "I don't have to keep secrets anymore."
"No more secrets, baby," I promised, kissing her forehead. "Only truth, and only love."
