Chapter 8 - Justice Served

It took the jury less than two hours to reach a verdict.
When we returned to the courtroom to hear the decision, my father sat next to me, holding my hand tightly.
"On the charge of first-degree felony child abuse," the jury foreman read, "we find the defendant, Ashley Vance, guilty." "On the charge of aggravated assault, guilty." "On the charge of reckless endangerment, guilty."
A quiet gasp escaped from the gallery. Ashley stared blankly ahead as the verdicts kept coming.
"On the charge of felony child endangerment," the foreman continued, turning to my mother, "we find the defendant, Diane Parker, guilty." "On the charge of accessory to child abuse, guilty." "On the charge of tampering with a witness, guilty."
Justice had been served. Entirely, completely, and without mercy.
At the sentencing hearing a month later, the judge did not hold back. He sentenced Ashley to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten. Diane, for her active role in the cover-up and the emotional abuse of her granddaughter, was sentenced to eight years in prison.
As they were led away in handcuffs, Diane looked back at me one last time, her eyes pleading for a forgiveness she would never receive. I didn't look away. I stood tall, letting her see the woman she had failed to break, and the mother who had saved her child.
When the courtroom cleared, Detective Miller and Officer Vance came over to congratulate us.
"You did an amazing job, Chloe," Vance said, smiling. "And Lily is one of the strongest kids I've ever met."

"She got it from her mom," my father said proudly, putting his arm around me.
For the first time in almost a year, I felt like I could take a full, deep breath. The storm had passed. The monsters were behind bars. It was time to rebuild our lives.
