Chapter 9 - Justice in the Light
The trial of Melissa Vance and Grant Holloway was dubbed by the media as "The Winston Conspiracy."
For three weeks, I sat in the front row of the courtroom. I watched the prosecutor play the recordings from Winston the bear. I watched Sarah take the stand, her voice strong and steady as she detailed the medical abuse and the courage she took to speak up.
Dr. Joseph was arrested attempting to board a flight to non-extradition waters in the Caribbean; he struck a plea deal, testifying extensively against Grant and Melissa in exchange for a life sentence instead of the death penalty.
When the verdict was read, there were no surprises.
Guilty on all counts: First-degree murder, conspiracy, wire fraud, and grand larceny.
Melissa was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As they led her away in her orange jumpsuit, she looked at me, her eyes pleading for a scrap of forgiveness I would never give. Grant received the same sentence, his expensive suits replaced by prison denim, his arrogance finally broken.
The court ordered the immediate seizure of all their assets, including the offshore accounts. The $1.2 million raised through the GoFundMe and the insurance policies was completely recovered.
But I didn't want a single penny of it.
