Chapter 5 - The Gala of Truth

By 11:00 AM, the estate was filled with the sound of clinking champagne glasses, hushed laughter, and classical violin music playing over the outdoor speaker system. Over forty high-society guests—local politicians, wealthy donors, hospital board members, and journalists—had gathered in the grand living room and surrounding terrace.
Vivian was in her absolute element. She floated through the crowd like a queen, accepting compliments on her dress, her home, and her unwavering dedication to "helping underprivileged children."
"Vivian, darling," gushed Mrs. Sterling, the wife of a prominent state judge, sipping her mimosa. "What you do for the pediatric ward is simply miraculous. You are truly an angel to those little children."
"Oh, it’s nothing, Eleanor," Vivian replied, her voice practically dripping with faux humility. "Children are our future. They are so fragile, so precious. Every child deserves to feel safe, loved, and protected."
I stood near the grand staircase, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching her perform. The sheer hypocrisy of her words made a sickening heat rise in my throat. I checked my watch.
11:20 AM.
Marcus texted me a single sentence: The DA and police units are entering the front gate now.
It was time.
I stepped toward the center of the room, tapping my pen against my glass. The sharp metallic ring echoed through the cavernous space, drawing the attention of the crowd.
"Everyone, if I could have your attention for just a moment," I announced, my voice carrying effortlessly across the room.
The laughter and conversations died down. Guests turned toward me, smiling. Vivian looked at me, a flash of irritation darting across her eyes at my unscheduled interruption, but she quickly masked it with a radiant smile and stepped to my side.
"Julian, sweetie, what are you doing?" she murmured under her breath, her smile fixed.
"I just want to say a few words about my wonderful wife," I said loudly, looking at the assembled crowd. "As many of you know, Vivian spends an extraordinary amount of effort presenting a specific image to the community. She works tirelessly to show everyone how she treats children."
Vivian’s smile widened, though her eyes held a subtle warning. "Julian, really, you don't need to—"
"No, Vivian, I insists," I interrupted firmly. "In fact, instead of me speaking, I think it’s better if we let the footage speak for itself. You prepared a video presentation for the board, didn't you? Let's take a look."
I raised a small remote control in my hand and clicked the master button.
The grand 85-inch television screen above the marble fireplace flickered to life. The ambient music stopped abruptly.
Vivian turned toward the screen, expecting to see her curated slideshow of charity events.
Instead, the clear, high-definition video feed of our service hallway filled the screen.
The room fell instantly silent as the audio blasted through the estate's surround-sound speaker system.
“Please, Mom! No! Don’t put me in the dark! I’ll be good! I promise I’ll be good!”
Ethan’s terrified six-year-old voice echoed through the high ceilings of the mansion, raw, frantic, and desperate.
On the massive screen, the entire room watched in horrified silence as Vivian—wearing the very same diamond earrings she wore today—coldly dragged a weeping Ethan by his arm, shoved him violently into the dark utility closet, locked the door, and walked away without a single trace of emotion on her face.
Gasp.
The room gasped as one collective entity. Glasses were lowered. Lips parted in utter shock. Mrs. Sterling covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide with horror.
"Julian!" Vivian shrieked, her face turning instantly ghost-white. Her smooth demeanor shattered in a microsecond. "What is this?! Turn that off right now! Turn it off!"
She lunged toward me to grab the remote, but I easily stepped out of her reach, holding the remote high above my head while the screen transitioned to the second video clip.
The second video showed the foyer from yesterday afternoon. It clearly captured Vivian pulling the velvet jewelry boxes out of her dress pocket, opening Maya's backpack, dropping them inside, and then dialing 911 while fabricating a panic attack on the phone.
“Help me, please... my nanny just stole my family heirlooms... I’m so frightened...” Vivian’s recorded voice sobbed through the speakers, contrasting disgustingly with the cold, calculating expression on her face in the video as she casually adjusted her hair in the mirror while waiting for the police.
"My God..." someone whispered in the crowd.
"Is that real?" another guest gasped.
"She locked her own child in a closet?"
The whispers exploded into a deafening roar of disgust and condemnation. The very people Vivian had spent years cultivating—her high-society peers, her wealthy donors, her influential friends—were staring at her with pure, unadulterated revulsion.
"Julian, you monster! You manipulated this! It's a lie! It’s an AI edit!" Vivian screamed, her voice cracking into a shrill, unhinged screech. She rushed toward the TV console, trying frantically to pull the power cords out of the wall, looking completely insane.
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the grand entrance hall swung wide open.
Four uniformed police officers, accompanied by two investigators from the District Attorney’s office and Sarah Lin, marched into the room.
"Vivian Hale?" the lead detective announced loudly, his voice cutting through the chaos.
Vivian froze, her hands hovering near the wires, her hair slightly unraveled, her face flushed with terror. She spun around, looking at the police officers in complete disbelief.
"What is the meaning of this?!" she demanded, trying desperately to summon her old authoritative tone. "Do you know who I am? My father is Judge—"
"Vivian Hale, you are under arrest," the detective interrupted cold-heartedly, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are charged with felony child endangerment, unlawful imprisonment of a minor, filing a false police report, and framing an innocent person."
"No! Get your hands off me!" Vivian shrieked as the officers stepped forward, grabbing her arms and pulling them behind her back.
The metal handcuffs clicked sharply around her wrists.
The exact same sound that had filled this room yesterday when Maya was taken away.
Vivian thrashed against the officers, her eyes wild with panic as she looked around the room, desperate for help. But every single guest turned their backs on her. People actively stepped away, looking at her with utter disdain and disgust.
"Julian! Help me! Tell them it's a mistake!" she screamed at me, tears of rage finally spilling down her face. "You can't do this to me! I am your wife!"
I walked slowly up to her, stopping just inches away. I looked down at her with a calm, freezing stare that stripped away whatever remaining sanity she had left.

"You aren't my wife anymore, Vivian," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet loud enough for everyone around us to hear. "You're just a monster who hurt my children. And now, you're going to pay for every single second of dark closet you put them in."
The officers pulled the screaming, thrashing woman toward the front doors, dragging her right past her high-society guests, past the expensive flower arrangements, and out into the bright sunlight where several news vans—tipped off by my legal team—were already waiting with cameras flashing.
