Chapter 4 - The Ticking Clock

The morning sun began to bleed across the skyline, casting long, crimson shadows into my office. It was 6:00 AM. I hadn't slept a single minute, yet a strange, terrifying adrenaline surged through my veins, keeping my mind sharper than it had ever been.
Marcus, Sarah, and Arthur were sitting around the conference table, assembling a legal juggernaut.
"Here is the plan," Sarah outlined, pushing documents across the table. "We are filing an emergency ex parte petition for sole legal and physical custody of Ethan and Caleb, along with a temporary restraining order against Vivian. We will present the video evidence directly to a family court judge at 8:00 AM."
"What about the criminal charges?" I asked.
"Arthur has already scheduled a meeting with the District Attorney at 7:30 AM," Sarah replied. "When the DA sees the footage of Vivian framing Maya and committing felony child endangerment, they will issue an arrest warrant immediately. We want the police at your estate before noon."
"No," I said, standing up.
Marcus looked up, surprised. "Julian, what do you mean, 'no'?"
"I don't want her arrested at some random time," I said, my eyes cold and fixed on the window. "Vivian has spent her entire life obsessing over her pristine social image. She cares more about what the high-society elites think of her than she cares about her own flesh and blood. Today at 11:00 AM, she is hosting the annual board brunch for the Children’s Hospital Alliance at our estate. Fifty of the most influential people in the state will be standing in our living room."
Marcus gasped slightly. "Julian... you want to execute the warrant during her charity brunch?"
"I want her dragged out of that house in handcuffs in front of every single person whose opinion she has ever valued," I said, every word laced with absolute vengeance. "I want her to feel the exact shame, terror, and humiliation she inflicted on Maya and my sons."
Sarah stared at me for a moment, then a slow, fierce smile crossed her lips. "I'll make sure the District Attorney coordinates with the local precinct. The arresting officers will arrive precisely at 11:30 AM."
"Good," I said. "Maya, I want you to stay here with my security team and the boys until I call you. You are safe here."
Maya looked at me, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Mr. Hale. But... please be careful. Vivian is dangerous when she feels cornered."
"She isn't cornered yet," I replied softly. "She still thinks she won."
At 7:15 AM, I drove back to the estate alone.
When I pulled up the long, winding driveway of the gated property, the grounds were already buzzing with caterers, florists, and event planners setting up white linen tables and massive floral arrangements around the marble patio. To the outside world, this place was a paradise of wealth and elegance. To me, it was now nothing more than a crime scene wrapped in silk.
I walked through the front doors, making sure to keep my face completely unreadable.
Vivian was standing in the grand foyer, wearing a stunning cream-colored designer dress, directing two workers who were arranging orchids. She looked up, her expression tightening slightly when she saw me walking in alone without the boys.
"Julian?" she asked, walking toward me, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor. "Where are the boys? And where were you all night? I woke up and your car was gone."
I forced a tight, tired smile onto my face, playing the role of an overworked executive. "I had an emergency at the hospital network last night. A server crash at our main clinic. I had to go in personally."
"And the boys?" she demanded, crossing her arms.
"They were restless after yesterday's drama," I lied smoothly. "I dropped them off early at my sister's house in the countryside. She's taking them to the zoo for the day so they don't mess up your brunch."
Vivian let out a long breath of relief, her posture relaxing immediately. "Oh, thank God. Honestly, Julian, after yesterday, those boys were acting so hysterical. It would have been a nightmare having them running around during the Alliance meeting."
"Yes," I said, staring at her with an intensity that made her hesitate for a fraction of a second. "A nightmare."
"Are you alright?" she asked, frowning slightly. "You look... different."
"Just tired," I replied smoothly. "It’s been a long night. I'm going to take a shower and change into my suit for your brunch."
"Please do," she said, already turning back toward her orchids. "Senator Vance and the Mayor’s wife will be here by eleven. I need everything to be absolutely perfect."
"Oh, it will be perfect, Vivian," I whispered under my breath as I walked toward the stairs. "I promise you, it will be unforgettable."

I walked up to the master suite, closed the door, and locked it behind me. My heart was pounding like a war drum in my chest. I opened my laptop, connected to the estate's central control system, and uploaded a specific video file directly into the media server that controlled the massive 85-inch digital display screens in the grand living room—screens that Vivian intended to use to display a slideshow of her philanthropic work during her speech.
The trap was set. All I had to do now was wait for the clock to hit 11:00 AM.
