Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Vance

Richard’s face finally lost all its color. For the first time in his life, his wealth, his lawyers, and his carefully curated reputation couldn't punch through the cold steel of protocol. Detective Sarah Vance didn’t blink at his name or his tailored suit.

“Step away from the vehicle, Mr. Vance,” the detective repeated, gesturing to the two uniformed officers who now flanked her, hands resting ready on their cuffs.

Richard looked around the sidewalk, realizing the crowd of onlookers was growing, staring at the prominent local philanthropist with sudden disgust and suspicion. His mouth tightened into a thin, bitter line. Without saying another word, he slowly backed away, stepping back into the open door of his sedan as his private security guards wisely stood down under the direct gaze of armed patrol officers.

“You’re making a grave mistake,” Richard muttered quietly as the officers moved in to secure his identification and issue a formal detainment notice for questioning regarding child endangerment and intimidation.

“The only mistake was letting you near our family for this long,” I said, pulling Chloe tightly against my side.

Officer Miller gently guided us toward the entrance of the police precinct, while Detective Vance stayed behind to process the detainment and order a full forensics sweep of my father’s properties and communication networks.

Inside the quiet, sterile warmth of the precinct’s family interview room, a female social worker named Linda brought Chloe a cup of warm cocoa and a box of colored pencils. While Chloe sat at a small table drawing a bright, sunny picture of a tree—her shoulders visibly looser, the constant tension finally draining from her small frame—Detective Vance sat across from Meredith and me with an open file folder.

“Mr. and Mrs. Vance, I want to assure you that Child Protective Services and our cyber-crime unit have already secured the smart-home servers from your residence,” Detective Vance said professionally, sliding a printed transcript across the table. “We have audio files, security footage logs, and digital records dating back over a year detailing systemic financial coercion, psychological abuse, and direct threats made against your family.”

Meredith reached across the table, taking my hand in hers. Her grip was firm, honest, and completely devoid of the fear that had chained her to my father for so long.

“What happens now?” Meredith asked softly.

“Your father-in-law is currently being booked at the county detention center without bail, given the active flight risk and intimidation charges,” Detective Vance replied. “As for Chloe, our medical examiners will conduct a complete physical evaluation, and then you can finally take your daughter home. A real home.”

I looked over at Chloe. She looked up from her drawing, caught my eye, and flashed a small, genuine smile—the first real smile I had seen on her face in months.
