Chapter 5 - The Mastermind’s Web

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone as the digital timestamp blinked mockingly back at me. 9:42 AM. The recital was scheduled to begin at eleven across town at the grand municipal arts center. Richard wasn’t just a grandfather visiting for a spring performance; he was a warden managing a heavily monitored prison.

“He’s outside,” I said, keeping my eyes fixed on Meredith.

Color drained from her face, replacing the hard, defiant glare with genuine terror. For all her posturing about money and status, Meredith was just another pawn trapped in my father’s meticulously constructed web of control.

“Harrison, listen to me,” Meredith whispered, stepping closer and grabbing my forearm. Her nails dug into my skin with desperate urgency. “You don’t know what Richard is capable of. Years ago, before we met, my family was drowning in debt. Your father ‘saved’ us. But every favor he grants comes with invisible chains. He owns my mother’s nursing home care, he owns my brother’s business, and he owns us. If we defy him publicly today, he won’t just ruin us financially—he will ruin us completely.”

“He is abusing our daughter, Meredith!” I snarled, shaking her hand off my arm. “Are you willing to sacrifice Chloe so you can keep living in a house he paid for?”

“No!” Meredith cried out, a tear finally breaking free and cutting a clean path through her makeup. “No, of course not! But running out there screaming will only trigger him. He has eyes everywhere. Look around this house, Harrison. Why do you think there are smart-home cameras in every hallway? Why do you think he insisted on installing them ‘for our safety’?”

The blood ran cold in my veins. The smart-home system—every motion sensor, every intercom, every automated lock—was installed and managed by Vance Technologies, a subsidiary owned entirely by my father’s private holding company. He hadn’t just been watching us; he had been listening to every private conversation we had ever had inside these walls.

“He heard everything we just said,” I realized, looking up at the small smoke-detector-like casing on the ceiling.

A sharp, artificial chime echoed through the room. The master speaker system in the hallway crackled to life, and my father’s smooth, authoritative voice filled the house.

“A wise realization, Harrison. Family loyalty is everything. Now, get Chloe dressed for her recital. We wouldn't want the community to think anything is wrong in the Vance household, would we?”
