Chapter 9 - The Sweetest Victory

Within twenty minutes, Chloe’s entire display of cakes sold out.

Local business owners, touched by her story and blown away by the incredible taste of her baking, queued up to buy slices, donating well over five hundred dollars to the children’s hospital fund. The local reporter even took a picture of Chloe holding her gold ribbon, standing proudly between her beaming parents, with Matt’s arm wrapped securely around both of us.

As the sun began to set that evening, painting the autumn sky in shades of gold and deep violet, our house felt entirely different.

There were no frantic phone calls. There were no demands for favors, no toxic expectations, no heavy invisible ledgers dictating our self-worth. There was just peace, laughter, and the warm, comforting smell of vanilla and sugar drifting from the kitchen.

Matt stood at the island, helping Chloe pack away her baking pans. He looked over at me, caught my eye, and smiled—a genuine, radiant, completely unburdened smile.

“More than okay, Elena,” Matt whispered, kissing the top of my head. “We’re finally free.”
