Chapter 3 - The Empty Seat

The drive home was wrapped in a heavy, fragile silence.

The ruined cake sat secured on the passenger-side floorboard, a silent monument to the night everything broke. Every few minutes, I glanced over at Matt. His hands gripped the steering wheel at ten and two, his knuckles white, his jaw set in a hard line.

Chloe had cried herself to sleep somewhere around Maple Street, her head resting against my shoulder, her fingers still lightly curled.

When we finally pulled into our driveway, the house looked smaller, quieter, and somehow safer than it ever had before. For years, our weekends had been dictated by Karen’s summons: Can you help move a couch? Can you pick up the specialty pastries for Sunday brunch? Can you spot Madison for her photo shoot?

We had lived our lives in the sprawling shadow of Matt’s wealthy, demanding family, constantly striving for an approval that was always dangled just out of reach.

Inside, Matt set the cake box gently on the kitchen island. He didn't turn on the overhead lights; he just left the warm under-cabinet lights glowing, casting long shadows across the granite.

“Are you okay?” I asked softly, coming up behind him and resting my hands on his back. He leaned into my touch, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to expel years of accumulated tension.

“I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for twenty years,” Matt whispered, turning around to pull me into his arms. He buried his face in my hair. “I’m sorry, Elena. I’m sorry I let them treat Chloe like that. I’m sorry I let them treat us like that for so long.”

“You didn't know it would go this far,” I murmured, stroking his hair. “Families are heavy, Matt. You were just trying to be a good brother.”

“No, I was being a coward,” he corrected me gently. “I was hoping that if I gave enough, if I was useful enough, they would eventually love us back. But they don't know how to love. They only know how to use.”

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the counter.

It was a text from Robert: Are you out of your mind? Mom is having chest pains because of this stunt. You need to call her immediately and apologize.

I held the phone up for Matt to see. He looked at the glowing screen, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

Without a word, Matt reached out, took my phone, tapped the screen, and blocked Robert’s number. Then he did the same with Karen’s, Madison’s, and every other extended family member connected to the toxic dynasty.

“What are you doing?” I asked, half-shocked.

“Closing the accounts,” Matt said calmly, slipping the phone back onto the counter. “Literally and figuratively. My phone is going on Do Not Disturb until tomorrow morning. Tonight, we’re going to eat cake.”
