Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Empire

The fallout was swift and brutal.
Within a week, news of the arrest leaked to the local press. The headline ran on the front page of the Seattle Times: "Prominent Socialites Arrested After Leaving Child in Anaphylactic Shock to Attend Luxury Lake Club."
The public reaction was immediate and catastrophic. The Carter name, once associated with high-end real estate developments and charity galas, became synonymous with unthinkable cruelty and elite entitlement.
The board of directors at Carter Development Group called an emergency meeting. Because of the ongoing forensic audit triggered by my divorce filing, massive financial discrepancies had been uncovered. Patricia and Greg had embezzled over $1.2 million from investors over the past three years to maintain their lavish lifestyles, using company funds to pay for private jets, country club dues, and designer wardrobes.
I attended the board meeting via video conference from my attorney's office.
When Greg Carter walked into the conference room, he looked like a shell of his former self. His suit was wrinkled, dark circles under his eyes, and his hands shook as he set down his folder. Mark sat beside him, looking completely defeated.
"Rachel," Greg began, trying to maintain an air of authority. "We can settle this quietly. If you withdraw the forensic audit, we will agree to give you a favorable settlement in the divorce."
Eleanor smiled—a predatory, professional smile. "Mr. Carter, you seem to misunderstand the situation. We aren't here to negotiate your company's survival. We are here to inform you of what comes next."
Eleanor slid a document across the camera field.
"As of 8:00 AM this morning, the primary lenders for your downtown construction project have revoked their loan agreements based on the morality clauses in your contract and the pending felony charges against your majority shareholder, Patricia Carter," Eleanor explained. "Furthermore, the state prosecutor's office has formally added tax evasion and grand larceny to the indictment."
Mark stared at me through the screen. "Rachel... this will destroy the business Dad built. It will bankrupt us."
"Your father built that business on integrity, Mark," I replied calmly. "You and your mother turned it into a piggy bank for your arrogance. You thought you were invincible. You thought you could treat my daughter like trash and face no consequences."
"She’s my daughter too!" Mark yelled, slamming his fist on the table.
"Then why didn't you protect her?" I shot back, my voice cutting through his outrage like a razor. "When your mother said Lily was lying, why didn't you check? When the school called, why didn't you answer? You traded your daughter’s safety for your mother's approval. Now you can live with the return on that investment."
Greg looked at Mark, his face pale with horror. "Mark, do something! Talk to her!"
"There’s nothing to talk about," I said. "The police have upgraded the charges against Patricia and Claire. And Mark... you have been formally named as an accessory after the fact for attempting to cover up the timeline of events."

Mark collapsed back into his chair, pressing his face into his hands.
The empire built on pride, status, and cruelty was crumbling to dust, stone by stone. And I hadn't even stepped into a courtroom yet.
