Chapter 6 - Building the Fortress

Over the next month, my new life took shape with breathtaking speed. I purchased a stunning, sprawling estate on five acres of land just outside the city. The house was a masterpiece of modern architecture, filled with massive windows that let in endless natural light, and most importantly, it featured a state-of-the-art air filtration system designed specifically to eliminate any allergens or dust.
I built a beautiful playground in the backyard for Lyra, complete with a custom wooden castle and a garden filled with non-allergenic flowers. For the first time in her life, she could run and play without coughing, her laughter echoing through the trees.
Meanwhile, my legal team, led by Eleanor Sterling, struck like lightning.
Saskia, my ex-wife, was served with custody modification papers. When she realized I now possessed a fortune that dwarfed her own and had hired the most formidable lawyers in the state, she tried to fight. She threatened, she cried, she even tried to call me to play on our past.
"Arthur, please, let's be reasonable," she sobbed over the phone one evening. "We can share custody. We can be a family again! I made a mistake with the trainer, I see that now..."
"You didn't make a mistake, Saskia. You made a choice," I told her calmly. "And now I am making mine. My daughter will never be neglected or used as a bargaining chip again."

Faced with overwhelming evidence of her neglect and the sheer financial power of my legal team, Saskia signed over sole physical and legal custody of Lyra in exchange for a modest, non-negotiable trust fund that would only pay out if she maintained a clean record and stayed away from us.
With Lyra safe and secure in our new fortress, I turned my attention back to my parents. The news of my sudden wealth had finally leaked to the rest of the family, and the wolves were beginning to circle.
