Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

The executive boardroom on the top floor of the Grand Astoria was normally reserved for quarterly financial reviews and sterile corporate mergers. Tonight, at 2:00 AM, it played host to a very different kind of meeting.

Marcus Vance stood nervously at the head of the mahogany table, smoothing down his tie for the third time in five minutes. Across from him sat three senior members of the corporate board, flown in on emergency private jets under the guise of an urgent security briefing.

Mr. Cole summoned us at this hour? board member Jonathan Sterling asked, his voice laced with annoyance as he checked his luxury gold watch. This better be good, Marcus. You assured us his reclusion was under control.

It is, or at least it was, Marcus stammered, sweating profusely under the harsh overhead lights. He... he requested an emergency full-board assembly. He said he has an announcement regarding the ownership structure and operational compliance of the entire hotel portfolio.

Before Sterling could reply, the heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open with a resounding click.

Adrian Cole walked in.

He didn't look like the broken, exhausted recluse who had hidden away in Suite 902 for weeks. He walked with an erect posture, his tailored charcoal suit immaculate, his eyes sharp, cold, and entirely focused. Behind him walked two individuals who made the board members collectively gasp: Victor Thorne, the top-tier corporate legal counsel, and Lucía Herrera, wearing her standard grey cleaning uniform, pushing a stroller containing a quietly babbling baby.

Adrian, Sterling sputtered, standing up halfway from his leather chair. What is the meaning of this? Who is this woman? And why is there a child in our executive boardroom?

Sit down, Jonathan, Adrian said, his voice echoing off the high ceiling with absolute, terrifying calm. All of you. Sit down and shut your mouths.

Adrian took his seat at the head of the table, flanked by Victor Thorne, who immediately laid down a thick stack of encrypted legal files in front of each board member. Lucía positioned herself near the door, her hand resting reassuringly on Mateo's stroller, her posture proud and unyielding.

What is this dossier? another board member demanded, pushing the papers away in disgust.

That dossier, Adrian said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the polished wood, contains the complete paper trail of your corporate coup three years ago. It details the forged death certificates, the illegal asset redirection, the intimidation of junior staff, and the systematic conspiracy to isolate me while you looted the Cole family trust.

The color drained from Marcus Vance’s face. He grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself, his knees buckling. Mr... Mr. Cole, that's absurd—

Shut up, Marcus, Adrian snapped, pointing a finger at him. Your name is right here on page forty-two. You were placed as operations manager of this specific flagship hotel to monitor my movements and ensure I never discovered that my wife and child were smuggled out of the country under false pretenses.

Sterling swallowed hard, trying to maintain a facade of corporate arrogance. You have no proof, Adrian. These are wild accusations. Any court in the country would—

Any court in the country, Adrian interrupted smoothly, gesturing to Victor Thorne, is already in possession of these files. In fact, federal marshals are downstairs as we speak, executing search warrants on your private residences and corporate accounts. Your assets are frozen. Your board seats are legally revoked under clause twelve of the emergency governance charter.

Silence descended on the room — a heavy, suffocating silence broken only by the soft cooing of little Mateo from his stroller.

Marcus Vance looked around the room, realizing in horror that the game was entirely, irrevocably over. He slumped back against the wall, sliding slowly down to the carpet in defeat.
