Chapter 10 - The Garden of New Beginnings

Six Months Later...The sound of laughter was no longer a secret in the Mendoza mansion. It was the soundtrack of everyday life.
The high iron gates of the estate were open, letting in the warm summer breeze. The formal mahogany study was still there, but it now shared space with a vibrant playroom filled with finger paintings, Lego towers, and a very messy chalkboard.
It was Saturday afternoon. Javier stood on the patio, wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans. He looked out over the lawn, which was no longer a perfectly manicured, sterile green carpet. It now had a small wooden playset, a sandbox, and—most importantly—a beautiful, muddy patch near the garden hose.
Mateo and Santiago were currently engaged in a fierce water balloon battle.
"Take cover!" Mateo yelled, throwing a blue balloon that splashed harmlessly against Javier’s leg.
"Oh, it's war now," Javier laughed, grabbing a green balloon from a bucket.
"Don't you dare, Dad!" Santiago giggled, running behind Patricia, who was standing nearby, holding a tray of freshly squeezed lemonade. She was wearing a beautiful summer dress, her hair tied back, her face radiant and free of the old fear.
Javier paused, holding the water balloon, his eyes locking onto Patricia's.
In the past six months, she had transitioned from a employee to the very heart of their home. She had taught Javier how to cook, how to play, and how to forgive himself for the past. And slowly, beautifully, the mutual respect between them had blossomed into something much deeper—a quiet, powerful love built on trust, laughter, and shared joy.
Javier walked over, setting the water balloon down. He took the tray of lemonade from her hands and set it on the table, then took her hands in his.
"You look beautiful today, Paty," he said softly, using the nickname his children had coined.
Patricia blushed, her eyes shining with the same warmth that had captured his heart six months ago. "And you look very messy, Mr. Mendoza."
"I told you," Javier smiled, leaning in closer, "I'm learning to play in the mud."
"Hey! No kissing! We're in the middle of a battle!" Santiago screamed from behind a tree, throwing a water balloon that exploded right between Javier and Patricia's feet, splashing them both.

Patricia laughed, a rich, beautiful sound that echoed through the garden. Javier laughed with her, pulling her close into a warm embrace, completely ignoring the wet grass and the splashing water.
For the first time in two years, Javier Mendoza knew exactly where he belonged. He was early, he was messy, and he was finally home.
