The fallout was swift and brutal. Richard tried to fight back, hiring a flashy defense attorney with the meager funds he could scrape together from sympathetic friends. But Marcus had built an ironclad case. The paper trail Richard had so arrogantly constructed became the very rope used to hang him in court.
Faced with the threat of severe federal prison time for wire fraud and embezzlement, Richard capitulated. He signed away any right to contest the divorce, waived all claims to alimony, and surrendered his shares in the minor subsidiaries he had tried to siphon off. In exchange, I agreed not to push for maximum sentencing, settling for a plea deal that left him a convicted felon, barred from ever holding a corporate executive position again.
Evelyn, terrified of spending her twilight years in a women's correctional facility, turned state's evidence against her own son and Pamela. Pamela’s real estate license was permanently revoked, and she fled the state, leaving Richard entirely alone.
