Chapter 3 - Unearthing the Rot

Marcus’s office was a fortress of oak and leather on the fortieth floor. By the time I arrived, he had already assembled three forensic accountants and a junior litigation partner. They had pulled every file, every signature, and every operational agreement tied to my company over the last five years.

While Mateo sat on a velvet sofa in the corner, happily drawing on legal pads and occasionally narrating his artwork in a quiet, beautiful whisper, I sat at the mahogany conference table and watched my marriage dismantle into a pile of fraudulent paperwork.

Richard had been methodical. Over the years, under the guise of "taking the administrative burden off my plate," he had presented me with stacks of routine compliance documents to sign. Buried within those hundreds of pages were carefully worded clauses granting him sweeping operational power of attorney. He had used that power to funnel company assets into a newly established corporate entity—a holding company registered in Delaware.

The junior partner slid a thick folder toward me. The holding company was named Apex Ventures. The registered officers were Richard, his mother Evelyn, and a woman named Pamela Croft.

I stared at the name. Pamela. I knew her. She was a real estate broker who had ostensibly been scouting commercial properties for our expansion. She had been to my home. She had drank my wine and laughed at my jokes. The accountants revealed that Pamela was not just a broker; she was the sole beneficiary of a trust heavily funded by Apex Ventures. The Aspen trip was not a meeting with investors. It was a closing meeting to finalize the transfer of my father’s primary commercial assets to Apex, effectively diluting my ownership to a minority share that required Richard’s counter-signature to liquidate. He was trying to steal my empire while I was busy making him dinner.
