Chapter 9 - Peace Restored

The dust settled over the Amalfi cliffs quite literally and figuratively. The threats from the northern syndicates faded away once they realized my grip on the Mediterranean trade routes was stronger than ever. Without Salvo and Dante conspiring against me, the business ran like clockwork, clean, profitable, and untouchable.
Life at the estate settled into a warm, harmonious rhythm. Elena became an invaluable part of the household, organizing the staff with a gentle efficiency that brought a sense of true warmth to the cold stone halls.
And Nora—little Nora—had made the grand staircase her personal royal domain.
Every afternoon, when I finished my work in the study, I would hear the familiar patter of tiny feet outside my door. It was always followed by three sharp knocks.

"Mr. Nicolo," she would announce proudly. "This one has a bridge."
"A bridge is even better," I would reply, kneeling down to inspect her work. "It means we can cross over anything."
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Mediterranean in shades of burning gold and deep indigo, Elena walked out onto the veranda where I was standing. She handed me a fresh cup of coffee, her expression serene.
"Nora's asleep," she said softly. "She was talking about her block castles all evening."
"She has a brilliant mind," I said, looking out over the cliffs. "She builds things that last."

"We both do," Elena whispered, her voice carrying a quiet gratitude that needed no further explanation.
I turned and looked at her, realizing then that the cold, isolated life I had built for myself over the decades had finally melted away. The fortune I had nearly lost in Venice meant nothing compared to the quiet peace of this evening, the laughter echoing through the halls, and the loyalty of a family that had been saved by a four-year-old's secret phone call.
