Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Geneva

Three weeks later.

The quiet Swiss village of Montreux overlooked the glassy expanse of Lake Geneva. Snow-capped peaks framed the horizon, offering an illusion of absolute peace.

Inside a secluded chalet perched high on the hillside, sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows. Leo was outside on the terrace, laughing as Delphine helped him build a snowman. Wren was sitting near the fireplace, methodically coloring a picture of a mountain.

Isadora stood near the window, watching her brother. She looked healthier now; the dark circles beneath her eyes had vanished, replaced by a soft, glowing warmth. But whenever a car drove past the distant main road, her body tense slightly.

I stepped up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist, resting my chin on her shoulder.

"You don't have to jump at every shadow anymore," I murmured gently.

She leaned back into my chest, sighing softly. "It feels like a dream, Julian. A month ago, I thought Leo was going to die, and I thought I was going to ruin your life. Now... we're here. In paradise."

"It's not a dream," I said, turning her around to face me. "Everett is in a maximum-security federal prison facing life sentences for treason, kidnapping, and attempted murder. Gabriel Vance traded his entire syndicate contact list for a reduced sentence in a witness protection facility."

"And the syndicate itself?" she asked, her voice dropping.

I pulled out a small black tablet from my pocket. "The encrypted drive Vance was carrying gave us access to the syndicate’s master accounts. Over the past three weeks, my legal team, working alongside international authorities, has systematically dismantled their financial networks. They are broke, hunted, and exposed."

Isadora looked at me, her eyes brimming with emotion. "You did all of this... for us?"

"I did it for our future," I corrected softly, reaching into my coat pocket.

I drew out a velvet box, opening it to reveal a new ring. It wasn't the massive, theatrical diamond I had given her during our grand engagement party—the one meant to impress high society. This was a delicate platinum band set with a brilliant, clear sapphire that matched the color of her eyes.

"The last ring was a piece in a game I didn't know I was playing," I said, looking deeply into her eyes. "This ring is a promise. No secrets. No lies. No fear. Isadora Vane, will you marry me? For real this time?"

Tears spilled over her lashes, but a radiant smile broke across her face. "Yes," she whispered, her voice choking with joy. "A thousand times, yes."

I slid the ring onto her finger, and as I pulled her close, our lips met in a kiss that erased the terror of the past months, replacing it with an overwhelming sense of peace.

From across the room, a tiny voice broke our silence.

"Are you going to kiss all day, or can we eat cake now?"

May you like

We broke apart, laughing, to find Wren standing near the fireplace, holding up her latest drawing. It showed a wedding cake with two big figures and two little figures standing beside it under a bright blue sky.

"Cake sounds like a wonderful idea, Wren," Isadora smiled, wiping her tears away as she knelt down to hug the child.
