Chapter 4 - Web of Deceit

The impact rattled my ribs, the gun flying from Everett’s hand and clattering across the floor into the shadows. We scrambled in the dim red glow of the flare, two men who had once shared meals, secrets, and trust, now fighting like feral animals.
Everett was older, but he had spent his youth in military service. He slammed his elbow into my jaw, stunning me, then drove his knee into my gut. I fell back, gasping for air, as he lunged toward the dropped pistol.
"I gave you everything, Julian!" Everett spat, his face twisted in a mask of rage as his fingers brushed the steel of his gun. "Your father was a weak fool who let millions sit in a vault while the world moved on! I earned this money! I built your empire while you played the benevolent gentleman!"
"You betrayed my family!" I roared, recovering just enough to tackle him by the ankles. He hit the ground hard, his face smashing against the concrete.
Before he could recover, I rolled over, pinned his arms behind his back, and pressed the cold barrel of my own pistol against the nape of his neck.
"Move, and your story ends here," I rasped, my chest heaving.
Across the room, Gabriel was crawling toward the iron door, bleeding heavily from his shoulder. Isadora stepped out of the gloom, standing directly in his path, her gun pointed squarely at his head.
"Give me the keys to the vehicle outside," she demanded, her voice ice-cold.
Gabriel looked up at her, coughing, a sinister smile touching his lips. "You think this ends with us, girl? The syndicate has your names. They have the boy’s school address. They have everything. Killing us just means you die next week instead of tonight."
"He's bluffing," I said, dragging Everett to his feet and shoving him against a pillar, securing his wrists with heavy zip-ties from the maintenance kit near the wall. "The syndicate doesn't care about Vance or Everett. They care about the ledger. And as long as I hold it, they won't touch a hair on any of our heads."
I walked over to Leo, who was trembling behind the pillar. I knelt down to his level, forcing my breathing to slow down, offering him a calm smile.
"Are you hurt, Leo?"
The little boy shook his head, his eyes wide as he looked at me, then at Isadora. "Are you the man Isadora talks about?"
I paused, looking up at Isadora, who flushed slightly despite the chaos. "What did she tell you about me?"
"She said you were a prince," Leo whispered. "She said you were going to save us."
I took a deep breath, standing up and pulling the boy into a gentle embrace before handing him over to his sister. Isadora squeezed her brother so tightly she wept, buried her face in his hair, whispering endless apologies.
"We aren't out of this yet," I said, breaking the moment gently. "Everett’s men are still on the estate grounds. They think he's in control down here. When he doesn't report back in five minutes, they’ll come looking."
"How do we get out?" Isadora asked, wiping her face.
"The old smuggling tunnel under the wine cellar leads to the boathouse on the river," I said. "It hasn't been used in thirty years, but it's clear. Delphine and Wren are waiting in the upper safe room. We need to collect them first."
"You're taking the housekeeper and her daughter?" Gabriel scoffed from the floor, clutching his bleeding arm. "You're adding dead weight, Julian. Save yourselves."
I walked over to Gabriel, pulled his silver-handled knife from his belt, and patted his pockets, extracting his secure satellite phone and a drive encrypted with syndicate codes.
"Wren is the reason I’m still breathing tonight," I said, looking down at him with utter contempt. "She has more honor in her little finger than you and Everett have in your entire lives."
I turned to Isadora. "Take Leo through the north archway to the secondary elevator. I'm going up to get Delphine and Wren. Meet me at the boathouse in ten minutes."
"Julian, no," Isadora grabbed my arm, her touch warm and desperate. "Don't go alone. Everett's men—"
"Everett’s men work for money, not loyalty," I said, looking down at our joined hands—this time, fully above board, fully honest. "When they realize Everett is captured, they'll scatter. Trust me, Isadora. I'm coming back for you."
May you like
She looked into my eyes, searching for any lingering resentment from the party, but found only resolve.
"I trust you," she whispered.
