Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After
The bell of St. Ignatius Elementary School rang out across the courtyard, signaling the end of the school day.
Children poured out of the front doors, laughing, shouting, and tossing their backpacks over their shoulders. Among them walked eight-year-old Harper Reed, wearing a neat navy blue school uniform, brand-new white sneakers, and a bright yellow backpack stuffed with sketchpads and storybooks.
She scanned the line of waiting luxury cars until she spotted the black Mercedes Maybach parked near the curb.
Leaning against the passenger door, wearing a simple button-down shirt with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, was Grant.
When he saw Harper, his face lit up with a brilliant, unreserved smile that he rarely showed the rest of the world.
“Daddy!” Harper shouted, dropping her backpack for a second as she broke into a full sprint across the pavement.
Grant knelt down just in time, catching her in a powerful embrace and swinging her up into the air as she laughed—a bright, carefree sound that echoed into the warm spring afternoon.
“How was school, little bird?” Grant asked, setting her gently back on her feet and taking her hand.
“It was amazing!” Harper beamed, her green eyes sparkling with pure joy. “I got an A on my spelling test, and Miss Gable said my painting of the Chicago skyline was the best in the class!”
“I knew you would,” Grant said proudly, opening the car door for her. “Grandma June has lunch waiting at home, and Noah, Sophie, and Miles are learning how to crawl across the living room rug. They’re terrorizing the family dog.”
Harper giggled, sliding into the plush leather seat. “We have to stop them!”
Grant closed her door, walked around to the driver's side, and slid behind the wheel. As he started the engine, he looked in the rearview mirror at his bright, beautiful family waiting for him at home.
