Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The legal storm that followed was swift and devastating for Joel and Dakota.

With the federal government handling the prosecution, Joel’s local connections crumbled like wet paper. The corrupt judge who had signed the emergency custody petition was suspended and placed under federal investigation.

The trial was short. Faced with overwhelming physical evidence—including the forged signatures, the financial trail of the Whispering Pines transaction, and the secret diary of Geneva—Joel and Dakota pleaded guilty to multiple counts of elder abuse, grand larceny, forgery, and conspiracy to commit arson. They were sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, with all their assets frozen to pay restitution.

The court officially annulled the illegal sale of Geneva’s historic home. The developers who had bought the Whispering Pines estate were forced to return the land to Geneva's trust, paying substantial damages for the illegal transaction.

Callie was officially appointed as Geneva’s sole legal guardian.

With the family fortune restored to its rightful owner, Callie no longer had to struggle to buy basic necessities. She hired a team of compassionate, professional private nurses to assist her, ensuring Geneva received the best medical care available in the comfort of her own home.

The toxic medications Joel had forced upon her were completely flushed from her system. While the Alzheimer's could not be cured, Geneva's cognitive function improved dramatically. She was no longer terrified, confused, or aggressive. She was safe, surrounded by love, and finally at peace.
