Chapter 9 - The Miraculous Morning

Six months later, the Kensington mansion felt entirely different.

The heavy velvet drapes that had kept the sunlight out for decades were permanently tied back, flooding the grand hallways with golden morning light. The antique furniture had been rearranged to accommodate a chaotic obstacle course of colorful foam blocks, small slides, and toddler-sized chairs.

It was a crisp Saturday morning in autumn.

Alexander woke up not to the shrill alarm of his smartphone or the cold hum of a New York trading floor, but to the sound of tiny footsteps pattering across the hardwood floor of the master suite, followed by the sound of bubbling laughter.

He rolled over in bed. Grace was lying beside him, her hair spread across the white pillows, sleeping peacefully with a soft smile on her face.

Alexander propped himself up on one elbow, looking down at her. Six months ago, she had been a weary, defensive woman hiding in a plain uniform. Now, she was a co-owner of this sprawling estate, a board member of a newly established pediatric foundation they had launched together, and the heart of his family.

Suddenly, the bedroom door burst open.

Clara came charging in first, holding her stuffed rabbit high in the air like a battle standard. Right behind her came Iris.

Not in her blue walker. Not supported by braces.

Iris walked across the bedroom carpet on her own two feet, her arms outstretched, wobbling slightly like a tiny, determined sailor on a rolling deck.

Alexander’s breath hitched, just as it had months ago on that glowing computer screen in New York. Only this time, he didn't need a camera to capture it.

"Daddy!" Iris squeaked, launching herself directly at the edge of the bed and scrambling up with a triumphant grunt.

Grace stirred beside him, her eyes fluttering open. She blinked sleepily, then smiled as Iris clambered over her chest to plant a wet, messy toddler kiss on Alexander’s cheek.

"Look who's walking," Alexander whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he wrapped both arms around his daughters, pulling Grace into the embrace as well.

May you like

Grace laughed, her arms coming around Alexander’s neck. "She's been practicing in the hallway for ten minutes. I told you she didn't need the walker anymore."

"You told me a lot of things," Alexander murmured, kissing the top of her head, then pressing a gentle kiss to Iris's forehead and another to Clara's curls. "And every single one of them turned out to be a miracle."
