Chapter 6 - The Trial of Thomas and Vanessa Hale

Six months later.
The High Court of the State District was packed to full capacity. Journalists, television crews, and curious members of the public filled every wooden bench in the grand courtroom.
I sat in the front row, dressed in a sharp white suit, flanked by Marcus. Across the aisle sat the defense table.
Thomas and Vanessa looked completely broken compared to the arrogant figures they had been six months ago. Thomas wore a faded gray prison jumpsuit, his hair thoroughly grayed, his posture hunched. The months in county jail without access to his wealth had aged him by ten years. Vanessa sat next to him, wearing an oversized beige prison uniform, her face devoid of makeup, her eyes hollow and filled with bitter resentment.
Their defense team—appointed by the state after their assets were frozen—tried desperately to argue for a plea deal, but Prosecutor Evelyn Reed refused to offer a single concession.
"The State calls Clara Hale to the stand," Prosecutor Reed announced.
I walked up to the witness stand with absolute calm, taking the oath, and looking directly into the eyes of the jury.
For the next two hours, Prosecutor Reed led me through the testimony. I recounted every single detail of that fateful night: the sound of the champagne bottle, Ethan’s distress, Vanessa’s cold glare, the sharp crack of her hand against my child's face, the deliberate shove into the deep end.
Then, I described my father’s actions.
"I ran to save my son," I testified, my voice reverberating clearly throughout the courtroom. "My father grabbed me from behind. He wrapped his arm around my neck so tightly I couldn't breathe. And while my nine-year-old child was drowning two meters away, my father leaned into my ear and said: 'If he can't survive, he doesn't deserve to live.'"
Gasps echoed across the courtroom. Several jurors shook their heads in disbelief and anger.
Thomas’s defense attorney stood up to cross-examine me, trying to cast doubt on my memory.
"Ms. Hale," the defense attorney began, "isn't it true that you were in a heightened emotional state? Could you have misheard your father’s exact words in the chaos?"
"I didn't mishear him," I answered firmly. "And we don't have to rely on my memory alone. We have the high-definition audio and video from the estate security system."
Prosecutor Reed then dimmed the courtroom lights and played the master video file on the large screens facing the jury.
The entire courtroom watched in stunned silence as the drama played out in real time. The visual proof was absolute. The slap. The shove. The brutal chokehold. The chilling, icy statement from Thomas. The frame-by-frame evidence left no room for doubt, no room for excuses, and no room for mercy.
When the video finished, several members of the jury were visibly moved to tears.
Next, Prosecutor Reed brought forward Dr. Aris, who presented the legal medical evidence, along with the forensic accountants who exposed Thomas's six-year scheme of forging my mother’s will and embezzling millions from Ethan's trust fund.
The defense had nothing to counter with. Their argument that it was a "tragic domestic misunderstanding" crumbled under the weight of overwhelming video, financial, and forensic evidence.
After a three-day trial, the jury deliberated for less than two hours.
"Will the defendants please rise for the verdict," Judge Harrison commanded.
Thomas and Vanessa stood up, trembling.
"On Count 1, Felony Child Abuse against a Minor, how do you find the defendant Vanessa Hale?"
"Guilty," the jury foreman declared firmly.
"On Count 2, Reckless Endangerment with Depraved Indifference, how do you find the defendant Vanessa Hale?"
"Guilty."
"On Count 3, Felony Assault and Child Abuse, how do you find the defendant Thomas Hale?"
"Guilty."
"On Count 4, Felony Obstruction of Life-Saving Rescue and Reckless Endangerment, how do you find the defendant Thomas Hale?"
"Guilty."
"On Counts 5 through 12, Grand Larceny, Forgery, and Financial Fraud, how do you find the defendant Thomas Hale?"
"Guilty on all counts."
Vanessa collapsed onto the defense table, sobbing uncontrollably as court officers placed hand restraints back on her wrists. Thomas stood frozen, his face completely drained of color, his eyes wide with shock as he finally realized that his reputation, his wealth, and his freedom were gone forever.
Judge Harrison looked down at the defendants with stern severity.
"The actions committed by both defendants represent a profound breach of human decency and basic familial obligation," Judge Harrison stated firmly. "Vanessa Hale, you are sentenced to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of parole for ten years. Thomas Hale, for your leading role in child endangerment, abuse, and massive financial fraud, you are sentenced to thirty-five years in maximum-security prison."
The gavel slammed down hard.
Clang.

It was over. The justice was absolute.
As the guards led Thomas away in chains, he turned his head toward me one last time. There was no defiance left in his eyes—only total defeat. I looked back at him, feeling no anger, no hatred, only a peaceful sense of finality.
