Chapter 3 - Gathering the Evidence

By sunrise, Ethan’s fever had broken, and Dr. Aris officially discharged him into my care with a clean bill of physical health, though he advised intensive psychological therapy to help him process the severe trauma. I carried Ethan out to my car, driving straight to a quiet, secure apartment complex owned by Marcus on the far side of the city—far away from the suburbs where my father’s influence ran deep.
At 9:30 AM, Marcus arrived at the apartment carrying a leather briefcase and a high-end laptop. He was a tall man in his late fifties, with sharp gray eyes and a commanding presence that mirrored my father's, but without the underlying malice.
He didn't waste time on empty pleasantries. He walked in, gave me a tight hug, patted Ethan gently on the shoulder, and opened his laptop on the kitchen table.
"Here is what we have," Marcus said, turning the screen toward me.
The screen displayed a crystal-clear, multi-angle video recording from my father’s backyard. The timestamp read 7:42 PM from the night before.
I watched with a quiet, burning intensity as the event unfolded on screen. The camera captured everything from a high angle. You could see the entire patio. You saw the waiter pop the champagne cork right next to Ethan. You saw Ethan cover his ears and scream in sensory distress.
Then came Vanessa.
The audio feed was crisp. You could hear her clearly saying, "Stop it. You’re embarrassing me." You saw her grab his fragile wrist, twisting it until he tried to pull away. You saw her lift her right hand and strike him square across the face. The slap echoed sharply through the speakers.
Then, the shove.
The video clearly showed Vanessa leaning into the attack, driving both palms into Ethan’s chest, launching his small body over the edge into the nine-foot deep end of the pool.
"Look at Thomas," Marcus pointed to the left side of the frame.
My father was standing near the outdoor bar. The moment Ethan hit the water, I started running toward the pool. Thomas moved with terrifying speed—not to save his grandson, but to intercept me. He grabbed me from behind, wrapping his heavy forearm directly around my throat, cutting off my airway while locking my body in place.
The camera microphone picked up his voice, low, icy, and devoid of any human emotion:
"If he can't survive, he doesn't deserve to live."
I closed my eyes for a brief second, feeling the ghost of his hand around my neck, before opening them with complete resolve.
"This is indisputable," I said, my voice steady. "It shows assault on a minor, reckless endangerment, and felony battery."
"It's more than that," Marcus corrected, his eyes flashing with tactical precision. "It proves deliberate intent to obstruct a life-saving rescue. Furthermore, look at what happens five minutes after you pulled Ethan out."
Marcus fast-forwarded the video. On screen, while I was CPR-ing Ethan on the concrete, Thomas could be seen walking over to Officer Davis—who had arrived early as a guest at the party—and whispering in his ear. Davis then handed Thomas his official police notebook, and Thomas wrote something down himself.
"Official misconduct and tampering with a police investigation," Marcus explained. "Davis didn't just take a lazy report; he let a retired chief write the official narrative on site. That constitutes a conspiracy to cover up a felony crime."
"What is our first move?" I asked.
"We don't go to the local precinct," Marcus stated firming. "Thomas controls the local District Attorney’s office. If we file this locally, the charges will be quietly downgraded or mysteriously delayed until the media attention dies down. Instead, we take this straight to the State Attorney General and the Department of Children and Family Services."
Before we could take another step, my phone rang again. This time, it was a call from my ex-husband, Julian.
I set the phone on speaker. "What do you want, Julian?"
"Clara! Where the hell are you?" Julian’s voice was tense, panicked. "I just got a call from your father. He told me you had a nervous breakdown at Vanessa's party, threw a tantrum, and put Ethan in danger! He said you attacked him when he tried to intervene!"
I felt a cold wave of anger, but I kept my voice perfectly flat. "And you believed him?"
"He’s a retired police captain, Clara! Why would he lie?" Julian snapped. "Look, your father and Vanessa are willing to let this go without pressing assault charges against you, but only if you agree to hand over full custody of Ethan to me temporarily while you get psychiatric help."
I squeezed my hands into fists under the table. Marcus shook his head slowly, signaling me to stay calm.
"Julian," I said smoothly. "Did Thomas offer to pay off your remaining gambling debts in exchange for taking custody of Ethan?"
There was a sudden, heavy silence on the line. Julian’s breath caught in his throat.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about," Julian stammered, his confidence instantly crumbling.
"I know my father," I said chillingly. "He’s paying you to take Ethan away from me so I lose my standing as a mother and can't push charges against Vanessa. Tell Thomas that his little game is over. If you call me again, I will have Marcus Vance serve you with a subpoena for financial fraud."
"Wait—Marcus Vance? You talked to—"
I hung up the phone before he could finish.
"He's terrified," Marcus noted with a subtle smile. "Good. Now, while I file the formal criminal complaints with the State Prosecutor, I need you to gather every legal document you have regarding your mother’s estate."
I looked at Marcus, puzzled. "My mother’s estate? What does that have to do with this?"
Marcus leaned forward, his expression turning deadly serious. "When your mother, Eleanor, passed away six years ago, she left behind a private trust fund valued at four million dollars, along with the deed to the Oakridge estate. Your father claims she left everything to him in a updated will signed three weeks before her death. But your mother called me two days before she died, Clara. She told me she was leaving the entire estate to you and Ethan, specifically to protect Ethan's future medical care."
My heart pounded against my ribs. "Are you saying..."
"I'm saying Thomas forged her final will," Marcus revealed. "For six years, he has been living in your home, spending your son's inheritance, and using that money to fund Vanessa’s lavish lifestyle and political connections. Up until now, we didn't have the leverage to force an audit of his accounts. But with felony child abuse charges hanging over his head, a judge will freeze every single one of his financial assets by tomorrow morning."

The scope of the retaliation was expanding far beyond what Thomas or Vanessa could have ever anticipated. They thought they were dealing with a frightened, isolated mother they could easily crush.
They didn't realize they had just pulled the pin on a grenade that would demolish their entire foundation.
